THURSDAY, TOLY 19, 1986 M - Learning To Drive Is Lifetime Job RALEIGH —-“Learning how to drive is not a five-easy-lessons proposition—it’s a lifetime job!” Those words composed Major W. B. Lentz’ message to Tar Heel motorists this week as he spoke' in connection with the Motor ' Vehicles Department's vacation safe driving program. Major Lentz is the State Highway Patrol exe cutive in charge of communica tions and transportation. Major Lentz pointed out that the past decade has seen marked forward in automobile de sign and production, with the re-, suit that modern automobiles are faster and more powerful any more numerous—than ever before. “But the increase/! speed, power and traffic density 'require more control and greater skill in driv ing,” the major said. Urging all motorists to keep, up to, date in their driving habits, Major Lentz said that’ many driv ers on our highways today are still using driving techniques as obsolete as the out-dated model car in which they . first learned to ('rive. “A motorist has to be alert to rapid developments in our high- ' way system, too, especially with so many new highways, bridges, and intersections springing up ov WHY YOURjCHILD m should l be - . iXM VACCINATED MmS against i POUO’nOW! 11 PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE REPORT FROM ' "~~=: UNVACCINATED vaccinated" tj —■■■ f, ) GET YOUR POLIO SHOTS AS SOON AS YOU**CAN?!^SS YOUR DOCTOrTI y 0R PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICER NOW! /• —1 " ■ 1 ii Every ounce j : - of JFG Special coffee is "PREMIUM FLAVOR" coffee! r- I 5 (9* ■ U / ■ er North Carolina,” Major Lentz said. "These smooth, ribbon-like roads ' cutting across mountain and -val ley from one end* of the state to the other are beautiful to drive on, but driving a modern high-power ed car on them requires control, precision and highly developed driving skills,” Major Lentz said. Pointing out that the comfort and ease of driving today has a dangerous tendency to dull the alertness of the driver to the in creased dangers of modern traffic, | Major Lentz cautioned all motor ists, especially those on vacation -trips, to drive safely and to keep alert at all times. “A good motto for every motor ist to heed,” ‘ the major said, is “Slow Down and Live.” villW \\F-—1 m cases per 100,000 I u I DON BIRON, Arena Director of the famed Cjierokee Ranch Wild West Rodeo. B. Phinegal, . Eshroe, Pennsylvania: I remember in thej years 1886 and 1887 when my fa-, ther worked ten hours a day on am up and down saw mill which was operated .ttoy water power. Father received 65 cents per day and wO lived on, a mountainside in Penn syl vania. My mother, with my baby sister and I woulcU quite often take Fa ther’s lunch to him. We had a mile and a half walk on a moun tain road to reach the main high way, a one-way road, as it is yet in I this year 1956. Flour at that time was burr ground, a 24-lb. sack was 45 cents. Bread made from this flour was dark brown in color. I often wish for a slice of Mother’s bread and, a piece of her pie, baked of some! kind or dried fruit. Mother neverj did any canning, but dried all of berries and many kinds of ap ples. She never canned cucumberst hut always packed them In a salty 1 brine and when ready to use soaked them in water until the salty taste was gone. , School opened the latter part of( September and closed the latter, part of March. Each child had to! furnish his own books, slates and slate pencils. A year or two later,! we got copy books and lead pen- 1 cils. The teacher wrote all the copies in the copy hooks. My copy book was made of fools-cap paper which my parents had to buy for me. \ . j (Sena rnntrlbatlons t* (hi* ulinn U The Old Timer, Community Press Serr iee, Bex 39, Frankfort, Ky.) __ j NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE TO EFFECT PAYMENT NORTH CAROLINA YANCEY COUNTY Know all men, and particularly S.
