The Thanksgiving holidays will be another period "of heavy travel on our roads, with many persons driving long distances to visit re latives, or attend football games, or both. Such holidays are always marked by a rise in highway acci dents and deaths. A whole book could be written on how these accidents happen and how they can be prevented, but in this limited space let us p'.int out only the following: 1. Almost all traffic accidents are some-one having violated a : traffic regulation. The commonest violation is excessive speed. While a speed of 55 miles an hour on the ppen road may be legal, it is still too fast at night if you cannot stop within-the range of your head lights, or at any time of day or night if the road is winding or slippery or narrow. 2. A contributing cause of many accidents is lack of alertness on the part of the driver. This may be due to sleep, iness, or actually fall ing asleep at the wheel; another cause is alcohol or certain drugs (such as cold remedies containing antihistamines). It goes without saying that nothing should be taken just before driving which would.make one less 'alert than usual. To put it briefly: “Careful drivers are survivors”.
