Murdock, Indian Trail Road, Burnsville, North Carolina, has enrolled at Mars Hill College on a four-year scholar ship awarded by International Minerals & Chemical Corporation. Angell, of Cattail Creek Colony, attended the Cherokee Fair and stayed overnight at “Rocky Waters Motel” in Maggie Valley. The motel was purchased this spring by Mr. William Pierce, the son in-law of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Comfort, members of the Cattail Creek Colony. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce have spent many summers in their ’summer cabin in Cattail Creek. Mss Lillian L. Stephens of Floral Park, L. 1., New York who has been a house guest of Mrs. Agnes M. Angell, in "Angell Haven!’ on Cattail Creek, for two weeks is returning soon to New York. This is Miss Stephens first visit to this locality and she has become an ardent admirer of our autumn scenery, and is looking forward to her next visit in the summer of 1959. SILVERS ABOARD THE USS SHELTON SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FHTNC) —Frank J. Silver, machinist's mate second class, USN, son of Mrs. Bonnie L. Silver of Pensacola, N. C., aboard the destroyer USS Shelton, is taking part in a First Fleet Striking Force Exercise, nicknamed “Barnstorm”, during Oct. 13-17, off the coast of South ern California. “Blue” offensive forces will train in launching carrier air attacks against a large land mass. Opposing “Orangs” de fenders will encounter the attacks using submarines, aircraft and other modern weapons. The exercise will include train j ing in the use of guided missiles— I the surface to surface "Regulus I”, surface to air “Terriers” and 1 air to air “Sidewinders” and "Sparrows” representing the operational missiles in the Navy today. Operations such as “Barnstorm” serve to keep ships of th e First Fleet in a high state of combat readiness preparatory to deploy ment to the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.
