IWI nm min' nr mi i in' hi I* 'I i r f j AR E-Ely .TI * iBHB M t G iv'’" r I All of our larger cities employ city managers and some of them also have the services-, .of highly trained city planners. While the majority of city managers are planning far the! future with vision and courage, they spend too much time correcting costly errors which were teaused by lack of planning in the beginning. But what about .our counties? Are we preparing for the “popula tion explosion”? Will your county be prepared to aciept new indus tries ? Provide for agricultural pursuits? Make desirable home sites available Hj£>r people . who will soon tire of knocking elbows in congested areas .of population ? As'f ar as I know, there are few, if any, counties'Who are giving the planning problem the atten tion it deserves. Wake County is now toying with the idea, due,, primarily, I eypect to the rapidlj expanding Research Triangle. Why must we be prodded into these things? Why is it that most of our cities and towns grow faster than the services provided- by city government? Will we ever learn or will we continue to stumble along? What about water? There is no question but that water will be the limiting factor in the planning and development of all cities and counties ip North Carolina.. In December, 1958, I devoted my column to the importance of care ful planning and cited the expert-1 ence of Macon County, Illinois, in! this connection. W-- -j* From A. G. Trimble, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: I remember when' Natural Gas was first discovered at Grapeville,. Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and was piped to my hometown, Scottdale, some twenty miles av^gy. The thing I want to reeall it how little was known about Natl ural Gas at that time and the Im portant part it was to play in our nation. As I remember, the main pipe line was possibly G inches with a very high pressure and not knowing how to control the pressure, a line piped to Ellsworth Wood.- Where the gas was permitted to escape,.for fear the pressure wquld force the pipe out of the ground. This condi tion prevailed for years. The roar could be heard In town some half,' mile or more distant. 1 For street lighting, a metal ball about 4 inches in diameter with small holes drilled in the same was placed on a pole at the cor ner of cross streets. Each eve ning these were' lit and turned, out in the morning. • When gas was first used for heat in the old-fashioned fire places, balls of fire clay were made by hand and placed in tha grates, to become red hot and. , give off heat. ■ Now natural gas, as we Jcnow^ Is one of the nation’s largest in-! dustiles and is handled with great, scientific knowledge. > 1 ' '' . ■ . She takes everyone’s boyfriend away from them. How could I keep my boy friend?’.’ OUR ANSWER:;-The fact that some boys and girls can’t stand the idea of not having a date all the time accounts for the continu ing trend on the part of teenagers to "go steady.’’ It’s a fad, like wearing white shoes or tinting a e freak in the hair. But it still re mains the opinion of this corner that teenagers, give up more than they get when.they tie themselves down by "going steady.” When a boy or girl begins to go steady, that individual’s circle at friends gradually becomes smaller and smaller The teens are a time to have fun and to have land enjoy many interests—the things there won’t be time for when it becomes necessary to earn a living and accept other adult responsibilities*, j The only way a girl of fourteen, can a date whenever she wants it is to go steady—we dofi’t recommend it. We don’t .think; it is necessary to have four date* a week. ) As for the cousin, we ask thi» : question: Does she get ALT, of the boyfriends? Some boys date ALL the girls and one or two dates with a boy doesn’t mean that he is hog-tied. ; If yon Hava a taenafe problem yon want to dlacnoA or an observation to make, addreos yonr letter to FOR AND ABOUT TEENAGERS.
