THE YANCEY RECORD 1 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 196* ‘ • fgSWgMgpe- M p - (sar(«n)'» .:.fc. J St iXtoJl oll^ge * - AW - # # . €f V'. *>»■ ? ■ ' # ' The home grounds are an Inte gral part of family life: It Is here that the family can live and play together and their friends can en joy the great out-of-doors. The de velopment of plans and arrange ments are reflections of individ ual tastes and -family compromis es. It lends itself to family pro jects, nature study, outdoor cook ery, hobbies, recreation, fruit and vegetable production and relaxa tion. How it develops is determin ed by the occupants and their de sires. Whatever the goal, a plan is necessary. The purpose of the plan is to determine individual * preferences, an estimate of costs, establishing priorities for immediate needs; essentials that can wait and avoid ing costly errors. Many mistakes are made in the beginning unless due consideration is given to site selection such as drainage, views and exposures. Errors in the selection of suitable plant materials may be disap pointing and costly in time and labor. Planting trees too close to gether, tall growing shrubs under picture windows and poorly locat ed walks and drives. These are just a few of the more common errors. The objectives of the plan are: attractiveness; convenience; to be useful and interesting. These ob jectives may overlap as they are accomplished. Public attractiveness of the! home and home grounds is an outward expression of the people who live there. When the residents' 1 of a home, or a community, ex hibit orderliness, neatness, and harmony, it never fails to attract attention and favorable comments because it reflects a spirit of com munity pride and neighborly rela tionships. School children can be' taught to respect beautiful sur roundings. Prom a material standpoint the attractiveness of a home and its surroundings will enhance proper ty values. The successful farmer prefers having an attractive and well arranged farmstead. Subdivisions with many houses of similar architecture can be made interesting with well kept lawns, appropriate trees and shrub selec tions. The use of different plans for foundation plantings, and allo cations of space for service, re creation and relaxation are im portant considerations. Focal points also add interest— a bird bath, a summer seat with climbing roses, a garden, or a lake or mountain view from a picture window. To be useful a plan must meet the needs of the family—la a re creation area for children, a pic- 1 nic area, adequate shade for rest | a vegetable and fruit garden. A J rustic setting for entertainment isj an asset if space is available. J APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR COAST GUARD OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct. 3 The Commandant, U. S.
