Sutton of the Soil Conservation Service at Burnsville. Soil Scient ists are mapping land in the County at the landowners’ request. They exfamine the soil at frequent • intervals, and plot the various ( kinds on aerial photographic maps. A new leaflet Issued by the Soil Conservation Service and the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Stat ion lists a large number of uses that can be made of the informa i tion shown on the soil survey. I “Anyone who has a financial in- J terest in the land should be in- soil informa tion. Anyone plans to dig a basement, build a road or dam or building, install a septic tank or drainage ditch or work in any way with soil materials I needs to know the kind of soil,” j Sutton said. “And the soil survey I is a good source of information.” will comprise 150 students. There will be nearly $600,000 worth of physical improvements to the campus j-eady when the term begins, the student body j City and County officials, zon ing and Planning commissions, r j health departments, public works departments, garden clubs, and similar organizations are using about soils. The soil survey provides a basis for plann ; ed use and development in the best interest of the public, accord (. ing to Sutton. s Included in the leaflet is a map of the state, showing the status j of published soil surveys in each county. It gives the date each map was published, together with s an estimate of the detail shown land general usefulness *\of the 1 j map. i- Except for a few of the ear her ones which are out of print, i- the published surveys can be (Vb a ta'ned from the Soils Depart i ment, North Carolina State Col c lege, Raleigh. Those published i since 1956 may also be obtained - from local Soil Conservation ’ Service offices in the counties ■ concerned, and from the county agricultural agents. Soil maps of will be 10 per ceirt r larger than l at this time last year, the 5 faculty will be enlarged and *m- J proved and there will be a host j ' of new courses and related inno vations. Most striking of the physical improvements is a new half mil lion dormitory for women. Named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Fox of Hickory, the four story structure will provide ac commodations for 115 coeds, a hostess and the clean of women. Other improvements include a new home management house for the home economics depart ment and several labs, class rooms and storage spaces in the science building. A new football stadium and gridiron also are beginning to take shape. The addition of the senior 1 year’s courses and an enroll- J neat increase of about 109 have J necessitated expansion of the jncuM tj. Eighteen new teachers nave been employed, only six ol them replacements. The other 12 are additions, bringing the teaching corps total to 73. New courses in all 13 of the seal's departments have been planned. Other additions and improve ments to campus l : fe include (1> inauguration of a program of practice teaching by the edu cation department, (2 1 opening of a student placement bureau, (3) a new student government, (4 1 nnounced rank ing of the faculty, (5) assign ment .of dormitories by classes (6) a trial plan of open stack library privileges for sensors and <7l a new procedure in the cafeteria to replace the recently discontinued mealbook plan.
