NEWS By; Donald McCourry Funeral Services were held Sun day, April 19 from the lower Brethern Ohiurch on Brummitts Creek for Mrs. Hanna Bennett who died Friday, April 17. We have not received all the infor mation about the funeral arrange ments. Mr. and Mrs. James Barnett of Unicoi, Tenn. visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gather Barnett, on April 19. They also visited an uncle, Conway Hughes, of Byrd Creek. Mrs. Floyd Barnett, Mrs. Her mon Barnett, Mrs, Pansy Hughes and son, C. W. Hughes, and Aspie McCourry, all of Relief were in Bakersville last Wednesday where they had an appointment at the Orthopedic Clinic. Mr. land Mrs. G. D. Barnett and son, Clyde, spent Tuesday night, April 21 in Tennessee visit ing friends and relatives. Clayton Hughes of Johnson City, Tenn. was here for several days last week visiting relatives and friends. Mr. Hughes is formerly of this section, but has lived in Johnson City for approximately thirty two years. Mr. Hughes is 87 years old. At one time he had 16 brothers and sisters living. There were 19 in his ftamily. His parents are the late John and Marjane Byrd Hupjhes. Marjane wa s the daughter -of Charlie Byrd who was the first settler in the area which is now called “Byrd Branch’’- and Charlie glave the branch its name. We will give' you the whole story in this news-' paper in a few weeks. The story dates back to 1861. i Mrs. America Griffith celebrat ed her 85th birthday on April 8. Mrs. Grffith is still able to do her house and garden work. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Griffith are panning on returning to Pa. in the next few days. They have been visiting here for the past week and a half. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Howell of Johnson City, Tenn. spent a Sun day here recently visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Miss Nettie Bennett and Arte J Bennett have returned to their homes after being patients in a Howell. Morgan ton, N. C, hospital. Mrs. Isabelle Barnett of Relief was a patient for three days re cently in Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn. Mrs. Barnett is the wife of Rev. Joe Barnett who still lives here. Rev. Bar nett is 77 years old and can get around as well fes many young men. It is said that Taylor Mclnturff spent a week recently in Asheville visiting his sister who is ill. mK and Mrs. Gene Griffith and baby daughter of Erwin, Tenn. visited his father, Beacher Grif fith, here recently. Mr. and Mrs.-Willie Whitson and children of the Dry Creek section near Unicoi, Tenn. spent a Sunday here recently visiting her sister, Mrs. Carmon Miller, and family. Word has been received here of the death of Bert Peterson who was killed in a coal mining acci dent in Coal wood, W. Va. on Thursday, April 16. Mr. Peterson was operating a “Mole” mine machine used for digging coal when the roof area of the mine caved in. None cf the other work ers were Injured. Mr. Peterson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Peterson, live here in the Poplar Section. He also has a cousin liv ing here, Aspie McCourry, and a bousin in Yancey County, Mrs- Rama McKinney who is a sister to Mr. McCourry. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Hutchins and son of Lenoir visited Mr. and Mrs. Garfa Hughes on April 19 in Yancey County. Shower activities have prevail ed in this area since last Wednes day( April 22, after a high press ure disturbance kept humidity low and the temperatures high for around two weeks. The tempera ture was 87 degrees here on April I 21, an all time high for the year. Mrs. Blankenship [Honored On Birthday Mrs. O. P.
