BROWN, Shop Manager PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY BY YANCEY publishing company Second Class Postage Paid at Burnsville, N. C. THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1965 NUMBER THIRTY-THREE SUBSCRIPTION RATES $2.50 PER YEAR Lesson In History Sometimes you don’t know exactly how ignorant you are. Take for instance the other day I was in a store kind of “chewing the fat” with a bunch of fellers when a bright eyed lad, hungry for knowledge, walked in and said "just how did Daniel Boone die?" I said “well, I didn't know Daniel was dead. I thought he was still down in his shop fashioning that pretty wrought Iron work that so many peo ple are crazy about.” Then this feller said “I don’t mean that Daniel Boone, I y mean the other Daniel Boone,” * And I said “well, I didn’t know” he was dead either. I see him just about every week on T. V. shooting Indians as always.” - 4 ~ And this other filler in the crowd that I knew had an eye for pretty wonfen, said, “why ’I konw how he died, he was flaying around with a good felqqking Indian S£iuaw and his Becky, caught up with jffim and shot him right bet •’Ween the eyes.” There was another feller TRinda on the heavy side with a pudgy stomach, said, “Now that ain’t the way it was at all, the way I learned it ,was that he got foundered on dried punkin and died.” .1 realized by that time that Divine Challenge Light of Truth Route 1 Burnsville, N. C. St. Luke By. Walter S. Greene St. Luke is without doubt one of the ablest and most in teresting of all the Bible writ ers. He has the unique dis tinction of being the only Gen tile among them. That first feller, I decided, liked to sit back and dream jpnd think of beautiful women. Then there was this other feller that got his pleasures out of getting his feet under a well laden table. The young student Qf his tory looked from one to the other and didn’t know what to believe. I decided that I’d become a student of history, too. So I went home and started sear ching through the B’s in the encyclopedia and finally found Dan’l. And you know, that feller, with the pudgy mid -section came close to having the right dope on how that famous frontiersman came to die. Ac cording to my encyclopedia Dan’l lived to the .ripe old age of 86 then gorged himself with sweet potatoes and it killed him. It may be that tiiat feller I surmised liked, to eat so well just couldn’t tell the difference in a sweet tater pie and pun kin pie. Anyway, that’s the end of that .And I’m a better histor ian now than I was before the question came np. Greek, while all the others were Jews or Hebrews. Luke was a physician, but he won much more distinction as a writer. We are reminded of Zane Grey who left the medical profession and be came famous as a writer. St. Paul refers to Luke as the“ beloved physician.” It seems that he was a native of Antioch In Syria. Some com mentators think that he and Titus were brothers. Paul and Luke probably met for the first time because Luke was a physician, and Paul was in need of his services at the time. It is possible that this was one reason why he was fre quently the companion of Paul in his journey’s and his imprisonment. Luke did not write as many books as did Paul, but he-did write two of the most famous books of all time. He was au thor of, “The Gospel According to St. Luke,” and "The Acts.” These show that he was a wri ter of the first rank and of artistic skill. One writer calls Luke’s Gospels, “the most beautiful book that was ever written.” None of the other evangelists shows so clearly the love and sympathy of Jesus for the sinner, the outcast and unfortunate. There is a rever ence for women as, the story unfolds, which shows that the writer was far ahead of his time . It would seem that Matthew wrote primarily for the Jews; and Mark, for the Roman world Luke wrote for the Greek world, and John for all Chris tians. Luke joined Paul at Troas on the second missionary tour. At that point in his narrative lie began to refer to Paul and his party as “we” instead of “they”. He was with Paul on his voyage from Caesaria to Rome, and he shared the dan gers and hardships of the trip. We know that Luke wasr with Paul during his final imprisonment in the dungeon at Rome. Paul wrote in his last letter to Timothy that “onlf Luke is with me”. This is our last glimpse of a true and loyal friend in a time of danger and peril. Randolph, office Mana ger for the Agricultural Stabi lization and Conservation Ser vice, reminded farmers th • t those Who heed some particu lar conservation project on their land this j year and who have not always done so are invited to discuss their plank with their ASC county com mittee. Cost sharing assistance through the ACP may still be available for needed conser vation work. Now r is a good time to plan and cary out needed conservat ion, Randolph declared. Many farmers this spring are setting aside land for a conserving use under the feed grain and wheat diversion program. Con servation work of a mechani cal or construction type can I most easily be done while the land is out of production. Springtime also in many areas is “rain time”, Randolph said. It is, therefore the sea son when ACP water-conserv ing and erosion-prevention pra ctices really perform—helping to get the. water into the soil to help drought-proof the land for the sumer. Randolph points out that the time-tested ACP is one of the Nation’s oldest farm -action programs. It is now in its 30th program year of con tinuous operation. Each year it encourages and assists in com pleting additional conservation of soil, water, grass, woods, and wildlife on more than a miiion farms and ranches. The farmer and the public match funds in bearing the cost of carrying out the prac tices.
