LAUGHRUN ‘Major Laughrun was assign ed to Bossier Base in May 1961 from Dhahran Air Field, Saudi Arabia, where he commanded a postal dptachment and ser ved as Area Postal Officer for six Middle East countries. Major Lapghrun entered the Army Air Corps in July 1940 at Maxwell Field, Alabama. He has held all enlisted grades through Master Sergeant and Wa rant Officer grades throu gh W-3._J?eceiving a direct ap pointment as Second Lieuten ant, Air Force Reserve in May 1949, he was called to active duty as a Second L’eutenant in Junw-1951. Major Laughrun served in the Euu pean Theater during World War II and In Japan during the Korean Con flict. His past assignment* include those of First Sergeant Assistant Air Inspector and Executive Officer to the In specto" General, Air Unlver sity; Base adjutant. Yokot;: Air Base, Japan; Chief, Active Duty Recall and Prbcurenie-o Branch, Air Reserve Record- Center; and Director of Per sonnel and Administration of an Air Reserve Training Wing. He has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Ar my Commendation Medal. Major Lauchrun is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Laughrun of Burnsville. Mr. and Mrs. a. D Barnett, of near here spent the night of April 3rd in Marion, N. C. visiting with Mrs. Barnett’s cousin. Smith Ray mid family Another dwe ling house was destroyed by fire on Pigeon Rcost about two weeks ago. This makes three dwelling houses that have been destroy ed by fire on Pigeon Roost in the past nine months. This one belonged to the Pates. Aspie McCourry and Conway Hughes both from Byrd C'ek were at Spruce Pine April sth, on business. They yere accom panied by Gaither Barnett of Pigeon Roost. Rev. Joe Barnett from Tipton Hill and Joe’s brother, Paul Barnett of Md. were here on Byrd Creek April 4th visiting with another brothe-, Will Barnett. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Barnett and daughter of Lenoir were here over the weekend visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Barnett. Floyd Miller’s youngest son of Pigeon Roost Is recovering from an Injured neck which he received about three weeks ago at the Tipton Hill elemen tary school. Mr. and Mrs. Smith Ray of Marion, N. C. here several days ago visiting with his mother, Mrs Sena Ray. ..Brief Summary of Today’s “News Jack Byrd of Pigeon Roost was here several days ago on business. The president, Wanda Riddle, cast the six votes allowed our cub for State Beta officers in the lobby of the George Van derbilt Hotel. After lunch the club toured the Biltmore House with another club Members of the club were planning on seeing the movie “Mary Pop pins” at the Plaza Theatre Saturday evening, but due to the ceiling falling in last week, were unable to attend. Sunday morning membb-s of the club we~e able to ’ook inside the Vance Birthplace, but were unable to tour the build diw to la< k of time. Cane Pivi r High School Beta Club was in change of the song session at the first general session. Susan Hensley was conductor. At the Friday night session Beta members from across the state presented an interesting talent show. The general session held Sat urday morning features a talk by former Governo r Terry Sanford. Approximately 4 000 Betas at tended the convention. THURSDAY. APRIL 15. 1905 PRACTICE TEACHER Cane River has a student teacher from Mars Hill Co’l ege. He is 21 year old Thomas Edward Ashworth. His malor Is English. He plans to teach in Virginia. He thinks Cane River is a rerv favorable school. BASEBALL Cane River plays Its first baseball game on Aorll 16 The* game will be played with East Yancey. VARIETY SHOW f ..Cane River High,, presented for the second time, a variety show At Bee Log.
