Volume 29 TRAGIC FIRE TAKES tlfi OF R. C. ROBINSON Tragedy struck a family at Newdale on the Blue Rock Road when fire took the life of one man, leaving his wife severely burned. A fire from unknown causes broke out In the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. c. Robinson of Newdale shortly after midnight Monday morning. Robinson was burned to death and hi s wife was hospitalized with sec ond degree burns, a son re ceived minor bums and & dau ghter escaped uninjured. Charles Crowder, Chief of the Newdale Volunteer Fire Department, said that they were called out at approximat -12:20 Monday morning in connection with the fire. Crowder reported that when the son escaped from the fire he ran to a neighbor for help, who in turn went to another neighbor’s house and called the Burnsville Fire Department. The Department here sum moned the Newdale' Fire De partment. When the Newdale Volunteers arrived at the scene, the house was falling in ac co-ding to Chief Crowder. It was later learned that mem bers of the family were awak- ] ened by Intense heat and ] smoke from the fire which i evidently had started In the bedroom where three members of the family were sleeping. Mrs. Robinson and the son jumped through a window of the fiery room and a daughter who was sleeping tn another' bedroom escaped through thw front of the house. The quota for this year was 450 pintS, and only 246 pints have been collected. The quota for this visit, is a minimum of 100 pints. Robinson suffered a brain tumor approximately two yea*s ago and was totally por allzed for a long period of time. Funeral services for Robin son were held at 2:00 p. m. Tuesday at Blue Rock Baptist Church. The Rev. Lloyd Glenn offi ciated and burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving in addition to the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Jane Presnell and Mis s Kathy Robinson; two sons, Marvin and Ralph all of Newdale; three sisters,, Mrs. Clinton Brewer and Mrs. Connie Mc- Neal of Newdale, Mrs Dorothy Silver of Burnsville RFD 2. and two brothers, Dwayne of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Raymond of Spruce Pine. TOWN ELECTION SET FOR MAY 4 Hie Town Election will be held May 4 at Town Hail. The polls will open at 6:30 a. m and close at 6:30 p. m The present bqgrd is running for re-election. No opposition candidates filed. The p-e R ent board members running for re-election are Robert K. Helmle, Mayor; P. C. Co'etta and B. R. Penland, commissioners. The term of office is two years. The Newdale Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring this visit. The women of the New dale Methodist Church will be in charge of the canteen. Dr. Melvin W. Webb will be the physician and Mrs. Bill Perkins the nurse in charge. In the First Baptist Church, Burnsville. District IV is composed of Buncombe, Madison, and Yancey Counties, and approximately 150 ladies attended this meeting. Mrs. Brooks Wilson, presi dent, presided at the meeting, with Mrs Willard Honeycutt serving as Secretary. Rev. Har old McDonald gave the devo tional. Mrs. P. C. Coletta gave Jhe speech of .welcome, with the response being made by Mrs. Helen Gardner. The spea ker for the occasion was intro duced by Mrs Brooks Wilson. £he was Dr. Eloise Cofen, As s stant Directo-, Home Econo mics, N. C. Extension Service, who spoke on “Initiative, Mot ivation and Inspiration of The Appalachian Region.” Mrs Andrew Johnson from Yancey County gave a report of the Nation Citizenship Con ference, and ~ kftbs Margaret Decker from Buncombe County reported and p~esented slides on the National Meeting in Hawaii. A luncheon followed at the Community Building with re ports being made by the var ious committees. APPLE CIDER SINGERS SERENADE MEN’S CLUB Btrumming and singing music as sweet as their name, the Apple Cider Singe's presented a program -of traditional Am- 1 erican folk sngs before the Burnsville Men’s Club dt its April meeting this past Monday night. The celebrated singing g-oup led off its! program with a delightful reiiditin of “Sylvie,” the song which won for the teen-age singers a first prize at the recent Mountain Youth Jamboree in Asheville., Jerry Clevenger, Amelia, Nona, and John Penland, and Margaret Riddle, all students at East Yancey High School sing with captivating style to the accompaniment of two guitars, a banjo, a ukelele, a tambrin, and a pair of musi cal spoons. Also on the Monday night program was Jimmy Childers, of Sylvia who described plans to estah’lsh a thousand kl no watt radio station in the vlcl- 1 nity of Burnsville. Mack B. Ray, the new club president, outlined an ambiti ous program for the members of the civic organizatmn. with a goal of making the Men’s Club a vital fote in th affairs of the region. SI,OOO PRESENTED TO LIBRARY Mrs. Dorothy Thomas Re gional Librarian, accepted a SIOOO check, one of ten annual Dorothy Canfield Fisher Aw ards, in ceremonies at the Mitchell County Courthouse in Eakcrsville Sunday afternoon. Elaine von Olsen, acting state librarian, presented the check to the Avery-Mitchell- Yancey Regional Library on behalf of the Book-of-the- Month Club. which sponsors the awards.
