To Meet Friday
Progress being made in
Yancey County on a variety
of Community Action Pro
jects will be the subject of a
meeting of the Yancey Coun
ty Advisory Committee of
W. A. M. Y. to be held on
Friday, September 3 at 7:30
p. m. In the Burnsville Com
munity Building. All people
interested in the Community
Action Program are invited
to attend.
In addition to Reviewing
progress of the program,
there will be an open discuss
ion of the various problems
encountered to date. Also the
meeting will give the com
mittee an opportunity to get
acquainted with the ( new
staff members of W.A.M.Y.
A further object of the
meeting will be the forma
tion .of several subcommittees
to assist In planning and
supervising the several po
frams. * Subcommittees are
being formed for Education
al Project?, Neighborhood
Youth Corps, Community Or
ganization, Publicity, Welfare
and Public Health, Small Bus
iness Promotion, and Hand
crafts.

Celebrates
Birthday
Mrs. Laura Hensley of the
Jacks Creek section of the
countv celebrated . her 71st.
birthday Sunday at her home
at Jacks C r eek. a picnic din
ner was enjoyed by Mrs. Hen
sley and all the guests The
party was given by her child
ren and approximately 150
people attended the celebra
tion.
M s. Hensley is a resident
of this county and have lived
here mo t of her life. She has
12 children, 65 grandchildren
and 28 great-grandchildren.
She is the daughter of the
late Bud and Suckle Morrow
Silvers.
At the previous meeting of
the Advisory Committee, held
on June 14, most Os the 43

It is hoped to> complete the
organization of the several
subcommittees at the meet
ing on Friday.

Chamber
Pleased With
Street Dances
The Yancey County Cham
ber of Commerce expresses
appreciation to the people of
the county for their coopera
tion in making the Street
Dances on Saturday night a
success. Many people have
given of their time and ener
gy to make this entertain
ment possible for all the peo
ple of the county.
The Chamber especially ex
presses their appreciation to
the local band, the Journey
men. The band consists of
John Penland, Jerry Cleven
ger, Bill Gouge, Ralph Mc-
Neil and Gary Presnell. These
boys do not receive any pay
from the Chamber of Com
merce for all the work they
do. The hat is passed each
Saturday night to collect a
donation to help pay for
some of the strings they
break during the evening.
Several local boys answer

Tills was appreciated''and It
is hoped they will be back
this week.
The dances are free to
everyone, young and old are
invited to take part.
The Chamber of Commerce
hopes in time to form a teen
club to be used by all the
teen agers of the county.
The money made on the
sale of soft drinks each Sat
urday night will be used to
purchase a public address
system for the teen club.
To achieve the goal set by
the Chamber of Commerce
the cooperation of all the
people is needed. Anyone
willing to help in any way by
work or donation is asked to
contact Mrs. Jack Edge,
Chairman of the Chamber of
Commerce Recreation Com
mittee.

East Yancey started the
football season off right Frl

over Happy valley, Tenn. The
game began with East Yan
cey kicking to Happy Valley
and then recovering a fum
ble after a 3rd down. Bob
Anderson carried for a first
down to the 8 and then quar
ter-back Mike Young took it
over the goal line for East
Yancey’s first touchdown of
the game.
Happy Valley returned the
next kick to their own 42 but
lost the 8 before E. Y. took
over after 4 downs. On the
Ist down for East Yancey,
Mike Silver caught a touch
down pass and then Ronnie
Robinson kicked the extra
point to make the score 13-0.
Happy Valley carried the
next kick to the 50 but lost
possession after 4 downs, and
the first quarter ended on
E. Y.’s 2nd down.
Both teams failed to score
during the second and their
quarters and the ball chang
ed hands quite often because
of fumbles.
East Yancey’s third march
to the goal line began when
they recovered a fumble on
Happy Valleys 18 yard line.
Bob Anderson ran another
first down before Mike Hoov
er found a jole in the line
and carried for a third touch
down. Ronnie Robinson kick
ed the extra point to make
the final score of the game,
which ended minutes later
with East Yancey again on
their way to their opponent's
goal. *
