Rubber bars the ears from the stalk, dropping them into foam rubber pad ded chutes leading to rubber conveyor belts. A new fluorescent lamp has been developed which seems destined to play an im portant part in plant growth, where supplementary (artifi cial) light is needed; and in after harvest ripening of such crops as tomatoes Th ! s is what is called a wide-spectrum lamp which gives a more even and con stant dist ibution of the waves of light found in the spectrum. In the case of green toma toes the light causes certain chemical changes which per mit the tomato to develop a true vine ripened color. The ripening process, under this w ! de-spectrum tube, also ap preciably increases the shelf life of the t'eated tomatoes. This should to good news for larpe tomato growers when early frost necessitates the harvesting of green fruit or the loo' of the crop due to cold weather. I SWIFT £ CO. A description of the operation of the harvester was broad cast by BBC as follows: “The mixture (potatoes, stones, clods, etc.) discharged by the havester drop through hori 7~ntal beams of X-rays. The X-rays pass through the po tatoes but are Interrupted by stones and clods. “When the beams are in terrupted, sorting fingers move aside and allow rtones or clods to fall to the ground; the nest of the time these fin gers stick out and deflect the potatoes down the chute”. It is reported that commer cial prototypes of the mach ine, which is the first of its kind in the world, are being built. is also a possi bility that the same principle might be used for separating impudities from coal. C. NICHOLS Field Representative Under the newly changed law, widows aged 60-81 may choose to receive monthly benefits at age 60 or 61, in stead of waiting until age 62 for a higher benefit. These widows may file their applications immediat ely. If any 60 or 61 year old widow is in doubt whether she can or cannot qualify under this new change in the law she should contact the social security office without delay. That’s the only way she can find out if she’s eligible for reduced monthly benefits be fore age 62. She should bring her hus band’s social secu ity card (and her own if she has one) and bring her marriage certi ficate also on old record or document showing her cor rect date of birth. -f 5 Swift AHA I 16% Dairy Feed J| .
