r GARDEN TIME BY: M. E. GARDNER I attended a meeting of the New River Grape Grow er’s Association on Wednes day, September 8 The meet ing was held in the Rhodes town community, between Richlands and Jacksonville, and was well attended. This is the youngest orga nization in the field of Hor ticulture (an area of* f*ee enterprise) but it is already making great strides in for mulating a sound program which should improve the economy of eastern Carolina bv developing, to its fullest potential, a crop that is na tive to the the Musca dine grape. f The amazing thing about this young and b ash outfit is the fact that they came to the N. C. General Assem bly, late in the session, with a request for research funds to help solve some of the problems involved i n thp breeding, production, pro cessing and marketing of Muscadines. The fact that they got a ?izable appropriation is a tribute to the caliber of lead ership in the o ganizaiton, aoiy assisted by political lea ders in the area, Chambers of Commerce and Individual citizens. Establishing a new indus try is one-tiring while keep ing it healthy is another It is assumed that the leader ship, already demonstrated, would not permit the exr pansion of the industry be yond the capacity of con suming channels to utilize the fresh or processed pro ducts at a profit. •*• » • Bagworms Bagworms! THE YANCEY RECORD Pfitzer juniper, euonymus and holly plants, all heavily Infested with bagworms The bagwo m is a cater pillar that lives in a silken cocoonlike bag. The worm gradually increases the size of the bag, as it grows, and by late summer it is about two inches long. The female lays a mass of eggs and this is the stage in which the in sect parses the winter. The eggs usually hatch in May or early June. There are two methods of control. The first, and eas iest if you do not have many, . is to pick the bags from the plants and destroy them. The second, is to sp~ay with lead arsenate when the eggs hatch and the cater pillars emerge from the bags and begin feeding on the leaves. This is a chewing in sect so a stomach poison is used. Sevin and malathion are also effective.
