WESTWARD HOI By: William L. Rath burn Realizing, as I do, that making complimentary re ference to one’s children is a risky matter, I have, so far, refrained from any al lusion to my own while re lating the experiences en countered while enroute to visit my youngest. I have long since learned that any attempt to pay the slightest compliment t o one’s own child is almost in variably aborted by some other parent’s account of his own brood, which ac count might begin with El mer’s bright sayings and end with something like the re moval of Little Busan’s ade noids. In view of all this, I have resolved to keep mum about the remarkable accomplish ments of my three prodigious youngsters, particularly such things as Bill’s having won an athletic scholarship to the University of Mississippi and Kathleen’s having done same merely by being brill iant. The reason I brought all thi. c up was because I want it understood that I did not travel three thousand miles merely to supplement my knowledge of geography. In stead, I only wanted to visit for a week with my youngest genius. x Now, let’s go back to Aug ust 2, 1965, where I am waiting for Kathleen and her mother who are goV"g to show me the University of Oregon, where the daugh ter has just completed her freshman year. Eugene, where the Univer sity is located, is 120 miles south of Portland, and a modem freeway connects the two cities. So welcome aboard the little white Val iant, and let’s have a look see at a college where every thing from journalism to animal husbandry is taught. On arriving at the Univer sity of Oregon, it was at once apparent that the ex pansion of this institution had exceeded expectations, for now the spacious campus grounds embrace a ceme tery, and the modern archi tecture seems lncongrous with that of the older build ings and vice versa. My daughter’s familiarity with the buildings and grounds gave her the quali fications necessary to make Ithe tour interesting. Not only that, but she has ab sorbed some of the Institu tion’s history. So it was most Interesting to know that she is majoring in journalism In the very same building where Eme:<t Heycock once stud ied. (You may recall that Heycock was a noted author of western fiction). It would not be an exag geration to say that the science buildings here cover as much ground as a'l the school buildings in Yancey County, put together." All during our tour, the thought uppermost in my mind was, that I just might be in the company of an au- THE YANCEY RECORD NOTICE OF STATE BOND ELECTION To be held on Tuesday, November 2, 1965 ir. the STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA on the issuance of 9360,936.906 STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY BONDS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF Yancey County that Governor Dan K.
