M W ’hß Our leys By: Mattie Burgin There were boys from North Carolina, There were boys from Tenn essee, There were boys throughout our country Who were happy, glad and free. They, the flower of our manhood, They, the finest of the wheat Marshalled by the sound of trumpet, Soon the coming foe to meet. We shall miss them in the Springtime When we hear the robin call We shall miss them by the fireside When the snowflakes gently fall. Bweet the memories of their childhood, All we have to call our own Hushed the sound of child ish prattle Boys too soon to men have grown. In the distance stands the mountain. Towering peaks against the sky; Whispering pines upon its bosom, Silvery streamlets slipping All Is lone wfthln the valley, From the fields no merry tune; Wild birds call and wild birds answer, O'er the hills and forest gloom. Jesus said these things must needs be, Help us Lord to understand, As we grope amidst the shadows; Shutting out all our earthly treasures Galling on the ocean foam, Tossing on the deep blue water, Landing in some port un known. God or mercy, watch above them; Make and keep them wholly Thine, On the forehead of our heroes, May the victor’s laurels twine. loved ones in the homeland pining, Let us ever watch and pray, Until we march Into the lovelight Os the great millennial day
