Sewage Disposal Plant In Operation, Tell Hiked The New Burnsville sew age disposal plant, costing approximately $300,000, has been placed In operation, thus ending a long history of offensive and s unhealthy pollution cf Pine,_ Swamp Branch and Little Crabtree Creek. With the town’s water bills, which will be mailed out the first of February, the citizens of Burnsville receive — the unhappy news that the improvement must be paid for. At Its regular January meeting the Town Board passed an ordinance apply ing a sewer service charge of one third of the water bill. This charge, mhich will be shown separately on the bills, will not be applied to those water customers who are not connected to the town’s sewer system. The sewer service charge of one-third of* the water bill, is lest; than the charge applied in most other towns that have recently bui |;- sewage dispdSal systems. Both Spruce Pine and Hen dersonville. for example, have applied sewer charges amounting to half of the water bill. For this reason, may I personally urge you to attain the best possible score on the exami nation. It is my understand ing they will be administer ed in March. The Academy will notify you directly con cerning the exact date and place. “Congratulations on your selection, and best wishes for a high qualifying mark on the examination.' Sincerely* Roy A Taylor, M. C.” The two East Yancey High School seniors receiving the above letters are Thomas/R. Young, son of Rev. and/Mrs. Ralph Young of Burnsville; and Virgil Styles, son/of Mr. and Mrs Morris Styles, also of Burnsville. The Doys are second cousins. Both Thomas and Young have made outstanding Numbur Twenty Two The new sewage plant Is costing approximately $300.- 000, fifty five per. cent of which Is being borne by a Federal grant. The balance is being financed through the sale of the Town’s bonds to the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency. When the town applied for the Federal grant and loan, the Town Board agreed to lmpose~ u~ sewer service char ge sufficient to cpver the costs of operation as well as to provide for the repayment of the loan. In short, the town has no alternative to the application of the sewer service charge. According to Maydt Bob Helmle, Burnsville is fortu nate In that the plant has cost less than originally es timated. The bond election authorizing the town to bor row its share ot the cost, was for a bond issue of $175,. 000. Actually, when bids were received from contractors, it was found that $145,000 would suffice. Now It ap pears that further savings below estimates will permit the Immediate repayment of about SIO,OOO of the $145,000 bond Issue. grades in high school. Their averages for the four year period to date is 97. Only one boy from Rep. Taylor’s district will receive an appointment to the Air Force Academy. As the above letter indicates, six have been nominated for the examination by Reo. Taylor. It is gratifying to have two Yancey County boys out of six for the district to receive nomination for apoointment, whoro fho V'n-«s is on schol astic knowledge. F.D.
