Orin John Wilson of New dale was taken to Mission Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning after a fall on the ice resulting In a broken hip. John D. Mcßlhney of New dale is a patient at Spruce Pine Hospital following a heart attack at his home early Friday morning. He Is greatly improved; Mr. Ray Higgins, popular Route 2 mail carrier, is a patient at Duke Hospital, where he will undergo sur gery. C. Mr. and Mrs. Arney Fox, Lisa Fox and Zoe Young were guests of the Brush Creek Community Club’s an nual rabbit supper on Friday night, the 21st. It was a pleasure to meet with and enjoy the hospitality of this Club. The weather here at this writing is kindly faired up somewhat, after the big e-ow-storm we had here Saturday, Jan. 15th, with 10 inches of the white stuff. The most exceptional part of the snow storm was. that it dumped up io 10 Inches mostly everywhere. The writer heard half dozen re ports, and 10 Inches was the depths of snow in there, such as Tennessee, Mitchell and Yancey Counties. Some re ports say Avery County, North Carolina had little over 10 inches. Another snow-storm struck this area over the week-end, bringing with it, cold-bitter weather for the area. Up to approximately four Inches, fell here In this area throu gh Saturday and up until about mid-day Sunday, Jan. 23rd. The last two major snow-storms we have had here In this area, has dump ed up to about 14 Inches of the white stuff. Miss Belenda Hopson, of Byrd Creek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hopson, is reported ill at this writing. Several here in this area has had colds or flu in the past month. - The birds have moved in to this area. Just a day or so before the winter snow storm moved into this area, it was' reported that very large flocks of birds flew across this area. One report er said that they were by the millions! (This writer didn't doubt it very much, since he saw hundreds fly across before then, and also after). The birds were headed on a north, north west direction. OBITUARIES MRS. SAIXIE BRYANT Mrs. Sallie Bryant, 84, of Celo, died Sunday In her home after a short illness. There are no known sur vivors. Services were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in Celo Method ist Church. The Rev. Alvin Jones offi ciated and burial was in Holcombe Cemetery, Burns ville. HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL THIS WEEK At Blast Yancey last Friday night and Tuesday night the local Panthers took both games from two of Madison County high schools. The Friday night game with Mars Hill High School proved to be one of the most exciting games, from a local view r , played this year by the East Yancey teams. At half time th.» Mars Hill boys were leading 47-25. In the second half the game took on a new color. Silver and Gillespie, held out during the first half, were run In. and the game began to change. The last half be- • gan with the Panthers show —ing their strength. The team averaged four points each minute of play until the game ended. They racked up 64 points in the last half to end the game with a score of 89-74. ♦ East Yancey scoring was Hoover 36, Gillespie 16, Ham by 11, Robinson 11, McCurry 8, Gibbs 4, Riddle 2, Silvers * 1. The Panther girls defeat e dthe Mars Hill team with a score of 49-23. The halftime score was 31-9 in East Yan cey’s favor. Scoring for East Yancey were Grindstaff 18, Jones 13, Ballew 12, and Hensley 6. Other East Yancey players in the game were Schwintzer Boone, and Grindstaff. However, the Newland boys did some expert shoot ing themselves, to defeat the hard fighting Rebels with a score of 105 to 89. Wilson, another Rebel high scoring player marked up 22 points. Other Cane River boys marking up points were Proffitt 14, Tipton 12, Whit son 4. McCurry and Robin son left ths scoring to their team mates. Two of the outstanding point-makers for Newland were Ensley with 24 points, and Greene with 21. In the girls game the Newland team came back after halftime, when the score was tied 21-21. to de feat the Rebels 35-21. Ballou for Cane . River made 10 points, Fox 5, Hol combe and King three each.
