Due to the fact that this was the second year of the fair it was better or* ganized. More work by the stud ents themseives was displayed. Physiology; Susan Hensley, Music. THE YANCEY RECORD Dedicated To The Progress Os Yancey County Burnsville, N.C. Symphony At Burnsville For the past month or more we have been calling to your attention the concert to be giv en in Burnsville Elementary School gymnasium on Saturday morning, April 15, at 10:00 by the Asheville Youth Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of 40 elementary school children under the direction of James E. Fisher. While the concert is programmed primarily for chil dren, all young people, as well as adults will find it very enter taining. The concert is sponsored by Girl Scout Troops in Yancey County, with, Mrs. Erwin Bur hoe acting as Chairman. Senior Scouts have been busy making posters which have been placed in schools, stores, and other conspicious places throughout the county. Cadette Scouts will be on hand Saturday morning to act as guides, ushers, etc. Lunch will be served to band members and other special guests in the school cafeteria at 12:00 o’clock. Parents of scouts are contributing the food and serv ing the lunch. Crdi| should be given to Mr. Ed Hunter, Principal of the Bur nsville Elementary School, as well as all principals and teach ers in the county, who have been promoting the concert and en couraging children to attend. Sponsors would also like to thank the Burnsville Women’s Club for their financial assist ance in the expense of bring ing tjie children to Burnsville; also the PTA for their interest and cooperation; and all inter ested citizens and organizations who are making this very fine concert possible Thursday April 13, 1967 Jack Belt Will Speak To Chamber A speech by a well known Asfteviue television newscaster wul highlight the annual dinner meeting of the Yancey County Chamber of Commerce at p. m. on Friday, April 21 ,in the cafeteria of East Yancey High School. Jack Belt, popular News Dir ector of WLOS-IV. will address the gala gathering of Chamber members and their guests, fol lowing a meal served by the students of East Yancey’s Home Economics Depatment. Though a young man of 32, Mr. Belt has made an out standing professional record and has distinguished himself in As heville for his leadership in civic enterprises. He is past President of the Asheville Junior Chamber of Commerce and was voted North Carolina Man of the Year in 1984 by the J. C. organization in the Tar Heel State. Before coming to the Land of the Sky, Belt served as News Director of radio and television stations in Morganton and Char leston, West Virginia and Adgds ta, Ga. He also has worked as Press Secretary to U. S. Sena tor Robert Byrd. Another part of the program will involve a brief business meeting in which Chamber members will consider three amendments to the bylaws of the organization and will hear a resume of the county’s pro gress in the past year. Tickets for the Chamto din ner meeting are now being dis tributed by Directors of the or ganization at two dollars ner ticket. Local Students- Named To Dean’s List At ASTC BOONE, N. C. A total of 604 students achieved grades which earned them honors on the Dean's List at Appalachian State Teachers College during the Winter quarter, according to an announcement from the office of Dr. Kenneth Webb, Jr., Dean of students. Jim Anglin has filed as a can didate for mayor of Burnsville to succeed Bob Helmle who has served as mayor for the past six years. At the same time Bas Penland and P. C. Coletta have filed! as candidates for the offi ce an the town tfaard. Mr. Anglin has been in busi ness in Burnsville since leaving the Armed Services following Miss Petersen Awarded Scholarship L Trig Peterson Iris Peterson, daughter of Mr! and Mrs. Richard Raymond Pet erson of Greensboro, and grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Peterson of Burnsville, has been awarded the Katherine Smith Reynolds Scholarship. She was chosen as one of six semi-final ists to compete for the scholar ship, and then one of two final ists. Valued at SI2OO, the Reynolds Scholarship is one of the largest offered by UNC-G. Applicants for the award are chosen on the basis of scholastic ability, evi dence of moral force of charac ter, and leadership ability. Iris was voted “Most Intellec tual" in the senior doss of Bco L. Smith Senior High School, where she is president of the band, secretary of the Latin Club, and treasurer of the Na tion il Honor Society. Number Thirty-Three World War 11, in which he serv ed as a commissioned officer. He is Past President of Yancey Merchants Association and of Burnsville Men’s Club. He is presently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Yancey Hospital and Sun Valley Nursing Home, and is an official in Higgins Memorial Methodist Church here. Mayor Helmle has announced that for personal reasons ha not be a candidate for ree’ec tirn. Both Penland and Co'etta ha v e served on the town board with Helmle. On this day the registration - books will be open from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. The Town Board has announ ced that the judges for the elec tion will be Philip Ray and John " Wilson. Burnsville PTA To Hoar Jamas Harwell Burnsville Elementary School PT A. will meet next Tuesday evening in the school auditor ium at 7:30 p. m. Mr. James Harwell, Band Dir ector for Macon County Schools, will speak on Music Education in the public schools. All parents and teachers are urged to attend. Classes For Scout Camp Loaders Scheduled Training course for Girl Scout Day Camp in Yancey County will begin April 18th at 9:30 a. m. at the Community Building in Burnsville. Mothers and anyone interested in helpjig at Day Camp are re quested to attend these courses. Day Camp will be held at Mt. Mitchell Camp Ground in Rums villt* June 19th through June 23.
