Housewives Urged To Practice Selective Buying President Johnson’s sug gestion that housewives prac tice selective buying, and a report that food prices were l. percent higher in mid- February than a month ear lier focused attenttion on and farm prices this week. Secretary of Agriculture Freeman noted late in the week that the consumer price support is six weeks behind actual prices, and called at tention to the farm price report for mid March wh'ch shewed farm prices down slightly Key items such as hogs are now off rather sharply, with further drops expected later in the year. In fact the Department of Agricu'ture predicts that by ithe fourth quarter, farm pt-oduct prices will be 6-10 percent below the first quarter. Prospects for lower prices sh/mild encourage housew'V es to look for cheaper bacon poultry and lettuce In the weeks ahead. Equally im portant, American farmers tri’l have ore of their frrrst prosperous years despite low er prices later this year with net farm income be tween sl4 and sls billion. Todav’s concern with the lirk between the Vietnam war and food prices invites comparison of present food price trends wHh the Korean cris's of 1950-51. This com parison shows mjjch greater stability In food and farm prtees now compared with 1950-51. Surprisingly product prices are al so well below 1950-51 levels, while wholesale and retali food pr'c»s are above Kor ean period levels Farm prices—at 2 percent below the 1957-59 level In February 1965—have now cl’mbed to 113 percent in February and were off slteh ,tly in March. But farm pri ces today are below 1950-51 levels This means that over the past decade farm prices have been a key stabilizer for the overall consumer pr'ce level even though food prices have risen. Veteran’s Officer To Be Here The N. C Veterans Com mission will have Jack C. Winchester, District Officer in the Courthouse at Burns ville N. C. with the I’bunty Service Officer on Thursday April 28, 1968 from 11:00 a. m. to 4:00 p m. and with the County Service Officer in the Curthouse at Bakens ville, N. C. on Friday, April ,23, 1966 from 8:30 a. m. te 8:30 p m. to assist with vet erans and their dependents. Mr Winchester stated children of certain deceased or disabled veterans who be lieve to qualify for educa tional benefits or N. C. Col lege Scho’arships should ap ply for these benefits dur ing the early part of their senior year in high school. The children who may have completed high school or will graduate next spring should file now. THE YANCEY KECORD Moreover, farm pr’ces the past year have been far mor» stable than. In 1950-51 and have stabilized at a lower level after stepped-up mili tary activity began. Thus during the Korean war farm prices rose by 30 percent whereas in the Vietnam war, they have increased only 14 percent before leveling off. With farm prices stabilis ing or declining this year wholesale and retail food prices should also level off or decline. The record of stability in this emergency is all the more striking when you consider that the India food crisis has come along at the same time as Vietnam. Wheat prices have been es pecially stable In the face of India’s needs.
