May Proclaimed Senior i Citizens Month President Johnson has pro claimed May 1966 as Senior Citizens Month with the announced theme of “A New Day for the Older Ameri cans.” And D. C. Nichols, field representive of the Asheville social security district of fice, in a statement today reminded a’l Western North Carolinians that May is also “the last month and the last chance for people who were 65 before March 1, 1966, to sign up for the medical insurance (‘doctor bill In surance”) under Social Sec urity so that they can have this protection in July 1966,, when the Medicare program begins.” Nichols urged a'l senior citizens 65 years old or older who have not signed up for this doctor bill insurance part of Medicare to contact the social security office without further delay. w e emphasized that a’most everyone 65 or over is elieWe f°r Medica r e but must sign up for it. Social security cov erage is not required, and neither is retirement neces sary for this protection. He explained that anyone wh? was 65 before March 1966 and who fails to sign uo before the May 31 dead line wiH not get another chance to apply for the “doc tor bill insurance’’ until October 1967. “And anyone applying in October December 1957 would not be protected until July 1868.
