One hundred of these were made in 1933 and were well on their way to being obsolete at the time of their Installation. Since 1955, 124 of the original looms have been replaced and others added so that now there are over 540 modern looms in operation. Just as each year has seen Improvement In methods and machinery, other things have improved as well. In the past five years, wages have increased 22%, and another wage Increase Is in the offing. F'oor space had been Increased almost 50%, and the old building has been modernized. Mr. Allen E. Gant, presi dent of the firm, is one of Sts founders. Through the vision of men such as he and his brother, the late Mr. Roger Gant, Sr., Glen Raven got an early start in man-made fibers. Through their foresight, the com pany grew to Its present position in the market place. Glen Raven has a story to tell, and It hopes to use this occasion to do so. He has also served as arranger and manager of this group. Kirk Young since entering East Yancey has attained a remarkable academic record, maintaining almost an A average in all subject mat ters. He is a member of Beta Club. His specialty is in the field of natural sciences, his excellence in these subjects having brought him to the attention of his teachers and appointment to the Gover nor’s School. Kirk is active in all types of community work, a mem ber of Martin’s Chape: Met hodist Church, where he participates in all phases of church, Sunday School and {young people’s work. His hobbies are gun collecting and hunting. No high school student in the state cou’.d hope for a greater honor than to be selected to attend Governor’s School, which was establish ed in Winston-Salem in 1963 through the efforts of Gov ernor Terry Sanford. The 400 children selected to attend the school (a'.l expense paid) are among the most talent ed and gifted children in the state.
