National Youth Conference Held In Washington DC. By: Ed Anderson Kenneth South of Tama rack Community has Just re turned from the National Youth Conference on Natur al Beauty and Conservation which was held in Washing ton, D. C., June 28-29. 'Kenneth South was one of more than 500 de'egates re presenting the nation’s lead ing youth organizations with a total membership of over 20 million. Thev came from the 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico. Highlight of the confer ence was the opening cere mony on the White House Lawn, Monday morning June 27. Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson addressed the dele gates and was joined by President Johnson, who made a surprise appearance. There was sightseeing in the White House for the de legates before they re'umed to conference headquarters for a series of Workshops and various other activities which included visits to the National Arboretum where they were addressed by Mrs. Orville L. Freeman and were Joined at lunch by Mr. Free man, Secretary of Agricul ture. Before the workshoo be gan, the delegates heard a speech by Secretary of the Interior Udall who told them they have to answer the question: “Oan we popu'ate and enioy our country without spoiling It?’ Leaders from industry, conservation foundations, re search and civic action groups acted as panelists within the workshops and advised the delegates and answered questions on speci fic conservation prob'ems. Each workshop came up with recommendations for action which the youth pan to implement In their home communities. The conferees formulated a variety of proposals, rang ing from conservation educa tion on the kindergarten level to the promotion of litter bags In every auto. THE YANCEY RECORD Other recommendations called for screening Junk yards from the motorist’s view to contacting disc Jock eys with their ideas about conservation. The emphasis of all the workshops however, was on education of the public about all the specific problems of conserving our natural re sources. The youth agreed that they would participate fully in constant efforts to ward this end. For example, they pledged to organize let ters-to-the editors campaigns in their local newspapers, and that they would con tact their legislators and community leaders urging action in conservation and natural beauty. As one advisor told the youths, they “would be the legislators, community lead ers, engineers, doctors and business’ executives of to morrow.” Russel! E. Train, President of The Conservation Foun dation gave the final charge to the conference. He told the de'egates to: “Tackle the big problems, both at home and across the nation. Many In your generation have not feared the big issues of our day such as: Freedom Now, In Our Time.
