C-—Memories of two former coaches and ath etic stars at Appalach ian State Teachers Coleje will be honored on Sunday, August 7, when the college's present Health, Physical Ed ucation and Recreation building is named and de dicated . To be known as Broome- Klrk Gymnasium, the build ing will be named and dedi cated'for Robert W. Broome and John Z.. Kirk. Jr. Both men died while serv ing as coaches at the college and both were outstanding football players as under graduates at Appalachian. Dr. W. Amos Abrams, as sistant executive secretary of \ the North Carolina Education Association and editor of the publication North Caro lina Education, will be the speaker for dedicatory ser vices schedu ed for 2:30 p m... Dr. Abrams Is a former chairman of the Department of English at the college. Dr. W. H. Plemmons, president of the college has announced that all athletes who played on teams with either Broome or Kirk or who played under them when they later returned as coaches have been invited to attend the ceremonies as special guests.. Contemporary coaches at other Carollnas Conference colleges and oth er schools also have been invited. Broome died June 20, 1959 from the effects of a bone marrow ailment while serv ing as head football coach. Kirk and his six-year-old son Steve.were drowned in a boating accident at Watau-a Lake on May 23 1961. The two had gone fishing. Broome was a native of Greenyllle, S C., while Kirk was a native of Leyington..
