Thursday, September 1, 1966 Members Os Boy’s Camp Speak To Lions Colonel Vidol and his boys from the Bov’s Camp gave an interesting program at •the Lions Club meeting Thursday nl^ht. The boys sang the nation al anthem of their various Latin American countries ant expressed a very favor able impression of the Am erican people; especially the fine hospitality they have re ceived in Burnsville. The Lions provided a bir thday cake and sang “Happy Birthday’’ for the Colonel. Lion President Arney Fox announced that the Youth committee would handle the International Essay Contest on Peace. Members of this committee are D. G. Mc- Clure; Dr. J. C. Cornwell and Harry Hayter. Schools and individuals interested in participating In this con test should contact this com mittee. Local; district; state and international prizes will be awarded. Contest Judging Hold Wednesday The Roads' de Improvement Contest Judging was held Wednesday afternoon. En tries judged were Micaville and Rocky Springs. Hie county winner will be enter ed in the WNC District Contest. Judges for the county con tent were Dr. Paul Fall; Mayor R. K. Helmle; and Mrs. E. L. Brlg~s. Both are going strong . and Paul goes along with the idea that “The world of tomor row is worth saving for—with l nited States Savings Bonds”. • Scott Will Speak At Democrat Meeting Lt. Gov. Robert Scott will be the principal speaker at an important gathering of Democrats at Cane River High School Saturday night. The meeting will be the first of its kind in Yancey County since she joined hands wLh neighboring counties in the newly form ed legislative districts. A large number of out of county Democrat candidates and leaders are expected ao attend the meeting. Not only were invitations sent out to senate and house can didates running in the new dis.ricts, but to practically ail county candidates and officers in the county in voked . j County leaders have made an effort to see that all sis ter county leaders attend the fund-raising dinner meeting. And many major issues will be discussed. Not only will there be good speaking and eating, but Poone Brothers Band will furnish enter.ainment. Yancey’s own Will iam E. Anglin will introduce Lt. Gov. Scott, Lt. Gov. Scott is expected to arrive in Burnsville around 1 p. m. and w 11, be available for the remainder of the afternoon to answer questions and discuss issues with thoe interested in the affa'rs of North Carolina. The dinner will begin at 5 p. m. with $5 plates for adults and $2.50 for children A.S.C.S. Comm. Elections In Sept. The real key to the suc cess of all ASCS programs is the farmer committee sys tem . These committeemen are responsible tor the ad ministration of farm pro grams on a county and com munity basis. North Carolina farmers will be voting on these com mitteemen in early Septem ber. Ballots will be mailed .to all eligible voters by Aug ust 30 1960. There mnst bt returned to the Yancey ASCS office or postmarked by September 9. Any person that is eligible to vote and fails to get a ballot should not'fy their local ASCB office. These committee elections are very important. We urge all elig'ble voters to be sure and vote for the best qualified persons on the ballot. Committeemen elect ed will take office on Octo ber 1 and serve through September 30, 1967. Number One Tickets have been on sale several days and are still available. On the 17th of August Sp. 5 Garry Fender was summoned to his battery Commander’s office’ Not knowing what was up he reported to his commander with a worried mind, but when he left that office he was a happy man. During his brief visit he had been promoted from Sps (E-5) to Staff Sargent (E-6). Sgt. Fender is the son of Mr and Mrs. cay Fender of Route 2, Eurnsvile His wife, Sandra, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Allen of Burnsville, and daughter Marcia are serving a three year tour with him in Ger many. If St. Fender’s present promotion rate should keep up he will be a Sergeant Ma jor within the next year ('-arid a half. He has received, , six promotions during his three years and two months of active duty th's being an average of one promotion every six months. During the past 13 month* he has gone from Pfc. (E-3) to Staff Sareent (E-6), one of the fastest promotion rates known. . .. Just prior to this promo tion Bgt. Fender was aw arded the 00-'d Conduct Award of the ’Army. Sgt. Fender wi'l be re turning to the States some time this coming spring. Members Added To Gcrf/on Club The American Red Cross Gallon Club of Yancey County is happy to welcome the following new members and promotions: Admitted to the One Gal lon group are: Charles B. Gillespie, Jr. and Edgar B. Hensley- The Two Gallon group welcomes the Rev. Woodward N. Finley. Will iam Clyde Riddle has ad vanced to the Three Gallon group.
