THURSDAY, JAN. 26, 1967 Mrs. Toy fa {fated CM President Washington, D. C. Mn Roy A. Taylor of Washington and Black Mountain, N. C., wife of the Congressman from the 11th District of North Carolina, today was elected president of the his tor c Congressional Club of Washington. Mrs. Taylor, a native Os n. c., succeeds Mrs. John C. Kunkel of Har risburg, pa. Elected for a two-year term, Mrs. Taylor becomes the 32nd pres : dent of the M year-old elub, located for ntore than 50 years in i«s present home at 2001 New Hampshire Ave. She also is the first North Carolinian to sente as its pre s dent, although a former resident of her home county of Buncombe, the late Mm. Peter Goelet Oerry of Rhode Island, sened as its president in 1927-28 when her husband was a member of the Senate. Mrs. Oerry, widow of Geor ge W. Vanderbuilt, haul for merly resided in Asheville, N. C., in the famed Biltmore House built by Vanedrbilt in the 1890’s. Membership in the club, which is the only club to be chartered by an Act of Con gress, includes of mem bers of both houses l of Con fr*vss, women members of Congress, wives of members of the Supreme Court and the Cabinet, and associate membersh : p includes their daughters and daughters-in law. Mrs. Taylor wll preside over the annual First I lily’s Breakfast, tra ditionally the most colorful ami festive event held by the club. Last year around 1,000 women from throughout the naton gathered in the P v oreham Hotel to honor the First Lady. The of the club, which has a current membership of around 550, alternates between Renubli eans and Democrats, with the president's nine member hoard including five from her own party and four from the other party. The colorful history of the club began in 1906 with a suggest l on at • capital din ner par tv that congressional W'<men should have a elub of their own. The elub held its first formal meeting in 1908 at 1432 K. Street, and President and Mrs. Wili am Howard Taft were honored at a formal reception at the club in the same year. The present clubhouse, built after the land and 830,000 for construction and furnishings were donated by Mrs. John B. Henderson, wife of tlhe Senator from Missouri, was dedicated in 1914 with a formal recep- tion at which President Woidrow Wilson was guest of honor. Op«n from January to June, the club has been self-mppcrting since it was founded, obtaining funds parly through an annual bazaar but largely through lhe sale of a Congressional Cookbook featuring recipes from members and wives of ambassadors to the United States. The cokbooks. whi ch are not placed on public sale, can be bought from the elub and are purchased by many members as gifts for brides.
