LOCALS Mr. Ralph Kems from tha UN'C-G was in town Friday of last week to attend a meeting of the Board of Dir ectors of the Parkway Play house. Carolyn Ray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Ray, a student at Bowman Grey School of Medicine, visited her parents last week end. Erwin Burhoe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. I. Burhoe, returned to Converse College on Tuesday, after a few days visit with her parents. She had as her guest her room mate, Alee Davidson from Davidson, N. C. Mr. Willard Honeyeutt of Jacks Creek and Mr. Denver Wilson of Rt. 6 are vacation ing in Lakeland, Florida. Mrs. Sam J. Byrd, who has been liv ng with her sister, Miss Ora Deyton, has return ed to her home on Rt. 1. Mrs. Byrd, who is a semi invalid, is somewhat improv ed and glad ot welcome visi tors. Frances Coletta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. C. C<#tta, a student at UNC-G, is spending the semester holi days with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Edge, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Anglin, Bruce Westall, and Harry Hayter , visited the spring merchandise show at the Colosseum in Charlotte last Week. Mrs. Kenneth Robertson, who has been spending sev eral days wi‘h her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Penland, in St. Petersburg, Fla., re turned to her home on Tues day. M*. a.nd Mrs. Howard Mur phy and daughter Wanda ot Krwn, Tenn. were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. Murphy’s mother, Mrs. W. C. Murrhy. Mrs. Mary Biankenshin of Johnson C : ty, Tenn., visited reltives and friends in Bur nsville and the County. Rev. J. M. G. Warner was guest sneaker at the meeting of the Men’s Club held at the Community Building Monday nioht. Supper was served by Clara Brown Circle of Higgins Memorial Me*hoMst Church. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Edw ar's and small daughter of Charlotte, were week-end guests of Mrs. E ’wards* par ents. Mr. and Mrs. frihtnn Ramsey. Mr. and Mrs. I« 0 Good of Marion were d'nner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Boone Saturday ni-ht. Sgt. James Holland, son of Mrs. carp-ce J. Pres-ell of Newdale, who has seen more than a year's sendee wPh the First Air Cavalry Divis ion in Vietnam, was released from the service on January 19th. and arrived home Sat urday. James was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air - M*<’al. He sustained two in jures. while serving in Viet nam. After a visit with his family, James plans to con tinue his educa ion. He ie a 196-d graduate of East Yan cey High School. Barbara June Fox, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Fox of Burnsville, made the Dean's List at Mars Hill col lege the past semester. Jerry Ayers, a Sophomore at North Carolina State Uni versity at Raleigh, was one of the students named to the Dean's List last semester. Jerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde A. C., was recently, presented the Air Force Com mcncation Medal for Meri torious service while serving in the Republ.c of Vietnam. He was presented the medal by General J. W. Baer in ceremonies at Headquarters, Tactical Air Command, Lang ley Air Force Base, Virgin.a. The citation to accompany the award of the Commenda tion Mec.al read: “Airman First Class Wade T. Harding distinguished himself by meritorious service as Spec al Orders Clerk, Con solida.ed Base Personnel Of fice, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republ c of Vietnam from 26 October 1965 to August 1966. During this period, A.r man Harding’s outstanding professional skill and initia tive a ded immeasurably in identifying and solving num '*■ •ncountered in the accomplishment of his duties. The energetic ap pl:cation of his knowledge has Homemakers Club Meets With Mrs. Sargent 18 members and two guests of the Burnsville Extension Homemaker’s Club met with Mrs. W. A. Y. Sargent Friday afternoon the 20th. After an inspiring devo tional by Mrs. Hattie Cleven ger, Mrs. P. C. Coletta, in the absence of the President, pres’ded over a business meeting. THURSDAY, JAN 26, 1967 Memorial Books To Library By: Ashton Chapman Important books continue to be donated to the Yancey County Public Library in Bur nsville as memor als to Mr*. W B Wray sr, prominent and widely beloved figura during her many years of ac tiv'ty in Burnsville and sur rounding areas. One of the latest of thesa memorial volumes is THE ACT OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS by Diana Klemin, donated by Mrs. Wray’s son Rush T. Wray., In recent years there has been a virtual revolution in the way children’s books h*ve been made and presented. Th's great change has cen tered on how children’s books have been illustrated. It la this changie, del'ghtfu! as well as significant, which this book examines.
