Contest For 4-H Clubs To be Sponsored A Western North Carolina Hor ticultural Crops Contest for 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America members in the 18 western counties has been an nounced by Keith Haisley of Sky v"'-4and, Chairman of the horticul tural -Crbps Commission of the Asheville Agricultural Develop ment Council. Sponsored jointly with the N. C. Agricultural Extension Ser vice and Vocational Agriculture teachers in the area, the contest is designed to encourage interest among the youth of the area in - grow ng horticultural crops and to recognize those with outstand »ig projects in 1967. Cash awards totaling $225.00 are being offered. First prize will be $100; second SSO; third $25 and five honorable mention awards of $lO each. Prize donors are the Biltrrv're Estate, Ashe ville Floral Company, Gerber Products Company and 3-D Farm, Fletcher. Eligible projects that can be produced for competition in the contest are all vegetable crops, fru : ts and ornamentals, includ ing shrubbery and Chrstmas trees. There will he no limit on the number of entries from each c-'unty. Burnsville, Nerth CareSnn * ‘ --/ * \ "*" ‘ ' - -i- Baptist Meet To Discuss Mother’s Day Offering The moderator and the miss ionary of the Yancey associa tion were among the Baptist leaders from a nine county area who met last week (Tuesday, March 14) at Boone to discuss plans for increasing church par ticipation in the annual Moth er’s Day offering for North Car olina Baptist hospital at Win ston-Salem. Representing Yancey were Rev. A. Z. Jamerson, pastor of Bolen’s Creek church, the mod erator, and Miss Laura Mae Hilliard, associational mission ary. The annual offering is the hos pital’s main source of funds for carrying on its extensive pro gram for the care of the needy sick. The group, who represented ~ 9 associations, discussed the THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1967 needs of the hospital in face of ris'ng operating costs which now stand to force curtailment of its charity nrogram unless additional supp it can be re ceived from over the state. Funds raised by the offering are received in. a majority of the 3,600 churches of the denomina tion and are channeled directly to the care of the indigent. They pre used for no other purpose. Dr. W. K. McGee, head of the hospital’s denominational rela tions, attended the meeting, one of ten held over the state.
