and children of Winston-Salem
have been visiting Mr. Sholes
mother, Mrs. Ruth Sholes of
Burnsville, and Mrs. Sholes’
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul
McCurry.
Mr. Rush Wray and daugrter,
Mary Louise, have returned
from a visit to Nogales, Arizona,
where they were guests of
Mrs. Bill Wray. While in Ari
zona they visited Phoenix and
other points of interest.
Little Patricia Derrough, da
ughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger
Derrough of Asheville, and
granddaugrter of Mrs. Troy
Ray, had the misfortune to
break her arm while visiting
her grandmother here.
Dr. and Mrs. Paul Fall have
as guests Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Fenton. The Fentons are in
route frcm their winter home
in Bradenton, Fla. to treir home
in Northfield, Ohio.
Mrs. Z. B. Byrd has returned
home after visiting her sisters
in Statesville, Winston-Salem,
Raleigh and Greenville, N. C.
Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Byrd have
had as their guests recently,
Mr. Byrd’s son, Richard Byrd
and Mrs. Byrd of Atlanta, Ga.
Word has been received here
of the death of Mrs. Pauline
Letellier, mother of Mrs. James
Bingham of Fort Lauderdale
and Burnsville.
Death occurred in Fort Lau
derdale on Monday, the 17th.
Funeral services will be held in
the chapel of Hardag Funeral
Home in Jacksonville, Florida,
on Thursday. Mrs. Letellier was
a native of Jacksonville.

Dennis Deyton of RFD 2,
Green Mountain, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Yates Deyton, has been
named the recipient of a SSOO
college scholarship grant award
ed by the Horticultural Crops
Commission of the Asheville
Agricultural Development Coun
cil. Purpose of the grant, spon
sored annually by Mr. and Mrs.
Coleman Zagier of Asheville, is
to encourage boys and girls from
Western North Carolina to en
ter the professional field of hor
ticulture and to provide finan
cial assistance to them in en
tering college.
Deyton, a senior at Yancey
county’s Cane River High School
will study horticulture at N. C.
State University at Raleigh. He
has achieved an outstanding
scholastic record in high school
and has been active in school
and community affairs. He ser
ved as president of his high
school class for three years, is
a member of the Beta Club, ac
tive in the Future Farmers of
America and the 4-H C’vh Dev
ton is also junior president of
the Green Mountain Community
Development Club.
According to W. J. Nesbitt,
rr'ncpal of Edneyville High
School and chairman of the
scholarship committee, the
grant was made on the basis of
interest, relative need, scholas
tic record, leadership and citi
zenship.
This is the ■ third year the
scholarship has been awarded.
