CANE RIVER SENIORS WILL HEAR DR. BLACKWELL Cane River High School Bac calaureate Service will be held May 21, 1967 at 11 o’clock a. m., in the Cane River High School Gymnasium. Dr. Hoyt E. Blackwell, Presi dent Emeritus, Mars Hill col lege will be guest speaker. Dr. Stanley Urquhart will pre sent the Invocation, Scripture and Benediction. The public is invited. Students will observe class day in the gymnasium May 24th, 10 o’clock a. m. Awards and recognition will be presented to outstanding students. The class day program will be given by senior honor students. \ Anglin Elected Mayor-Coletta Penland, Comm. The Town of Burnsville held an election Tuesday to elect a Mayor and two town commis sioners, with 199 voters coming to the polls to vote for the un opposed ticket. Elected for mayor was James A. Anglin, his first time to en ter a race for an elective office. Brother of Judge William E. Anglin and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Vi. Anglin, J'nV as he is known in Bur nsville is in business here and is active in church and civic affairs. Commissioners elected were B. R. Penland and P. C. Coletta. Both Mr. Penland and Mr. Col etta have served on the Town Board for six years, along with Mayor R. K. Helmle, who ch n se not to run for mayor in this election. THE YANCEY RECORD Burnsville, N.C. Lion’s Club Elects Officers The Burnsville Lions Club held their regular meeting last Thursday night at the Amber jack Fish House. No planned program was given because • election of officers for the com ing year, beginning Judy 1, was held. Lion J. Yates Bailey was el ected president for the coming year, with Lion Marvin C. Vess, Jr., elected as secretary, and Lion Doyce McClure elected as treasurer. . Lion Bailey, a member of Proffitt’s Store Company at Bald Creek, is a Past President of the Bald Creek Lions Club which is now inactive. He has been very active in the Burnsville Club for the past year, serving as secre tary. Lion Vess, who recently jo'ned the local club is a Certi fied Public Accountant with an office in Burnsville. Lion Mc- Clure, who was reelected to the pest of treasurer for the club, has been Driver License Exam iner here for the past few years. The L’ons Club here is very active in projects to give aid where needed, and last year won an award for work with the blind. The Club sponsors an eye clinic at the Public Health Build ing here, and will participate in a Glaucoma Clinic to be held in Spruce Pnc later this j>ear. The Club meets each second p.nd fourth Thursday nights at the Amberjack. Thursday MAY 4, 1967 MAYOR HELMLE HONORED BY VOLUNTEER FIREMEN Burnsville Mayor R. K. Hel mle was honored last Friday night at a supper in the Com munity Building sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Department here and by other town officials. D. R. Fouts, town attorney and former mayor, introduced Mayor Helmle who praised the Burnsville Fire Department for its combatting fires both in and out of Burnsville. He pointed out that the volunteer department is on call at all times, day or night, and that its members al ways met their responsibility when called upon. Fire Chief Bob Hilliard pre sented Mayor Helmle with an engraved gold watch from the department and commended Mr. Helmle for his excellent work during the period of his office, both as mayor and for his work with the fire depart ment. Church Plans To Be Presented To Building Comm. Progress is being made in plans for a new Baptist Church here, according to announcement by church officials. A meeting is scheduled for Monday night, May 8, for the Building Committee of the church, when a completed pre liminary stage of the plans will be submitted to the committee. The completed preliminary plans to be shown to the com mittee will include a large color drawing of the proposed build ing, with floor plans and inter ior sketches. If the Building Committee accepts ihe plans Monday night, a brochure will be mailed to each church mem NUMBER THIRTY-SIX fire whistle blew about the mid d’e of the presentation of the •gold watch. An automobile had caught fire only a few blocks away. They saw that the fire was out before returning, of course. The supper was prepared by Pensacola Methodist Church. The Northwestern Bank here aided w'th the finances. Mayor He'mle, who plans to leave Burnsville soon to Arizona where he will reside, was hon ored at a recent meet’ng of the Yancey County Chamber of Commrec. William A. Banks, a Chamber of Commerce officer, presented Mr. Helmle with a certif cate for his unselfish work in Burnsville and Yancey County. ber Tuesday morning. First and second-floor plans on pages two and three, and on the back page will be the plot plans. On Wednesday night, at the time for the regular Missions Night Supper Meeting, the plans will be presented to the entire church. The meeting Wednes day night will be for discussion only, and the architect will be present to answer any questions from church members. Then, at the Sunday morning worship service, the plans will be pre sented to the church for a vote.
