Carolyn Fox-David Me Curry Crowned May Day Queen And King On Manday, May 1, Cane Riv :r High School held its second annual May Day program. The program began at 1:30 with Cane River students presenting the traditional Maypole dance. These students were: Helen Deyton - Larry Riddle, Helena King - Eugene Mclntosh, Christine Honeycutt - Gary Dey ton, Carolyn Talent - Bruce Br ggs, Sandra Buckner - Benny Riddle, Judy Peterson - Jerry R'ddle, Faye Buckner - Brady Bailey, and Nina Allen - Van Hylemon. < This year’s Calico Maidens are Dana Proffitt, Kay Evans, Susan Hensley, Barbara Hol combe, Norma Allen, Bobbie Fox, and Janet Cox. They sang Cruel World, This Land is Your Land, and Sylvia. The g'rls wore navy blue skirts, light blue blou ses and blue bandanas. A newly formed singing group at Cane River called the “Cuck oos” sang Cukooß, Michael, and Blue. The members of the group are Lois Doan, Edgar Angl n, Brady Bailey, and Van Hylemon. The Cuckoos have their own music which is a twelve string guitar for folk songs and an electric for “rock.” The Cane River square dance team, who attended the Moun ts n Youth Jamboree in Ashe ville, also performed. Representatives from several elementary schools participated in the program. Three year old, Raylene Fox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fox present ed a tap dance. Students from Bee Log School, an instrumen tal group called “The Mistakes" next. They were from Mrs. G. Robinson’s music c.ass. Mrs. Vera Ray brought two cute little girls and a boy. They stole the show with their folk dances. Mrs. Nola Wilson brought her f'rst grade from Burnsville School. They presented a skit called "Mama and Papa.” Mrs. U. B. Deyton brought her square dance team from Clearmont. The most exciting event of the May Day Festival was the crowning of the May Day Queen and King. The candidates were chosen from each senior home room. The King and Queen were chosen by most popular votes from the Cane River Senior class The Queens and their escorts were seated on the football field until the final moment. They were seated according to homeroom. The first couple to walk through the May Day Arch was Sandy Grinestaff and her escort, Steve Styles. Sandy wore a long pink gown with a pink umbrella. Sandy and Steve were the candidates from Mrs. J. Sparks heme room. Next were Effie Murphy and Perry Wilson, candidates from Mrs. K. Zuver’s home room. Effie wore a white floor length gown with a white umbrella. The next couple to walk through the Arch was Carolyn Fox escorted by David McCurry. Carolyn wore a pale yellow floor length gown and carried a yellow umbrella to match. Carolyn and David were the candidates from Mrs. C. Cox’s heme room. The last cou ple was Wanda Hensley and Tommy Robertson. Wanda wore a floor length gown of baby blue and carr'ed a blue umbrella Candidates from Mr. J. Buck ner’s heme room. The final moment came for t v e crowning of the Queen and K'ng. Carolyn Fox and David McCurry were picked by the most votes: to be Miss and Mr. May Day Queen and King of 1967. The crown 1 ng was beauti ful and everyone was pleased with the outcome. Master of ceremonies for the program was Lois Doan. Spon sors were Mrs. Lucy Kates and Mrs. Cara Cox.
