THE YANCEY RECORD N.C. Patrol Needs Men RALEIGH - The North Car olina H ghway Patrol mobile recruiting unit comes calling in * Waynesville and Asheville this week in an effort to woo eligible young men into the or ganization. Alabama CltV to be applied to North Carolina crops than is currently being used according to North Caro lina Department of Agricultur e’s Soil Testing Division. Each year, soil samples taken from problem areas show, more of ten than not, that the cause of the poor growth on many of these areas is due to a need for lime. Unfortunately, once a crp has been planted little can be done to correct an acid soil con dition since lime must be thor oughly mixed with the soil for quickest and most efficient neu tralizing action. This does not mean; however, that lime need not be applied if it cannot be well mixed with the soil and ap plied well in advance of plant ing time If an acid soil condi tion exists, lime applied at or near the time of planting will still help if it can be mixed with the soil to some degree. The efficiency with which lime acts will depend on its fineness, the degree to which it is mixed with the soil and the length of time it has to react. The best guide to liming needs is a soil test. Liming without a soil test is at best a calculated guess. When a soil test is made, factors such as soil pH, soil texture, soil organic matter and calcium levels and the crop to be grown are taken into consid eration in determining the amount of lime needed. In ad dition to this information, a soil test will also provide an in ventory of nutrient levels pre sent in the soil. This informa tion can best be used as a guide in developing a sound fertility program., If you feel your fields may need lime, have a soil test made now. It is still not too late to ap ply needed lime. Doing so may help to prevent "problem areas” or “problem fields” from show ing up on your farm this sum mer, the end result being better yields and higher profits.
