You keep saying that ev erybody should contact the Soc ial Security Office to file for Medicare 2 or 3 months before reaching 65. So, for this purpose it must make no difference whether we have worked under socal security—or whether we have retired or not? A. It makes no difference. We know that many of you who are nearing 65 have no plans to stop working. That’s f.ne. You don’t have to retire at all to get Medicare coverage. But you - must file an application for it. Another good reason for filing, without fail, during the 3 mon ths before the month you reach 65 is that you may also find you're entitled to some cash benefits that otherwise you would not have received. Thou sands of people have been plea santly surprised in this way. It’s possible in some cases (particularly where family bene fits that is, to a wife and per haps children are also pay able) that you may earn over $3,000 a year and still receive considerable social security money. However, to become entitled to the Medicare protection itself can mean substantial money savings when one is hospitalized or has high medical bills. Q. When a person goes to the Sanalac Dry Milk 10 Qt. % yfpresh 3 / Ground // Social Security Office to file for Medicare as well as for mon thly benefits he must estab lish his age. Right? A. That’s right. There are many kinds of records that may be obtained as evidence of age. But the oldest records are us ually the best. The Social Security Office em ployees will advise and assist any applicant if necessary in getting the required proof of age.
