LOCALS Norman Ray, Jerry Ayers and Thomas Young have returned to Raleigh, where they will at tend summer school at N. C. State Un versity, Raleigh. The boys will share an apartment in Raleigh fcr the summer. Born to Mr. and Mrs. John E. Cahill of Alexandria, Va., a daughter, Mary Christie, on June 3rd. Mrs. Cahill is the for mer Carolyn Clevenger, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Clev enger of Burnsville. Mr. and ,Mijs. Clevenger flew up to Ale - *andr a on Sunday to visit their daughter, and get acquainted with the granddaughter. Mr. C’evenger will return this week. Mrs. Clevenger wili stay on for three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Jess Styles and daughter Pamela spent last week in Hickory visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ramsey. Mr. and Mrs. W Hard Fox at tended the graduation of their grand daughter, Jane, in Win ston-Salem las tweek. She grad uated from North Davidson High School and will enter A.S.T.C. in Boone this fall. Jane is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lee Fox. They also v'siUl Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Fox and sons and Carlton Ray who is a pa tient in the hospital there. Miss Amelia Penland is home with her mother, Mrs. Kathleen Penland, for the summer vaca tion, she is a r'sing junior at the University of N. C. at Greensboro. She had as her guest last week-end William Lasater of Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. John Hansil and children of Charlotte and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Neil and daugh ter of Huntersville v ; sited rela tives here last week-end. Mr* W, J. Banks, her daugh ter. Miss Barbara Young of Milli gan College, Tenn., is visaing her parents, Mr and Mrs. Ralph Young, here during the summer vacation. Mr and Mrs. Edward Buck ner and daughter, Juliene, at tended the funeral of Sam Mc- Ewen in Erwin, Tenn., last Thursday. Mr. McEwen died last Tuesday in an Erwin Hos p tal. Mrs. Nell Clouse is a patient in Mission Memor al Hospital Hospital in Asheville. Mrs. Ckuse is a former resident of Burnsville. Dr. Garland Wampler, Helton Carmichael, Clayton Whitson and Jim Covington have return ed home after a fishing trip to Canada. They were gone for a week. The Frederick Bacons are the proud grandparents of a baby girl, born on June first to AB and Mrs. R chard N. Bacon, in San Mateo, California. Mss Mary Ellen Sprang of Mansfield, Ohio, a student at Milligan College, spent last week-end visiting Barbara Young and her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Young. Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Edwards and daughter, Maria, of Char lotte, vis ted Mr. and Mrs. Ash ton Ramsey and Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Edwards over the week end. Carolyn Young of New York City visited relatives here Mr. and Mrs. Jess Styles and Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Young. Thomas Young returned to N. C7 State University, Raleigh, after spending a week with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Young. Mr. Ralph Kerns of Greens boro, Managing Director of Parkway Playhouse, was in town last week for a Board meeting. Mr. Bruce Westall was soloist at the wedding of Renee Sams of Asheville to Richard Smith of Weaverville. The wedding took p’ace Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p. m. in Merrimon Av enue Baptist Church. Renee is t,re daughter of Mrs. Hiram Young of Asheville and Mr. T. F. Sams of Marshall. Mrs. Young is the former Kathleen Blalock of Micaville., Jerry Ayers, a ris'ng Junior at N. C. State University, Ral eigh, has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring term. Jerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ayers of Burnsville. The Burnsville Women's Club will hold its regular meeting Thursday night at 8:00 in the Community Building. All mem bers are urged to be present. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hair of Spindale, and Miss Jean Cooper of Raleigh were the week-end guerts of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Deyton, Jr., and daughters of Edenton, N. C., visited Mr. Deyton’s mo her, Mrs. L. G. Deyton, over the week-end. Mrs. James W. Reel end chil dren of Marion visited her mo ther, last week. Mrs. L. B. Butner has as her guests her daughter, Mrs. Mag gie A skins and son, Sammie, of South Lyon, Mich. Her son, Bill B. Butner and son, Mike of Black Mountain also visited lis mother on Saturday. Mrs. But ner’s niece, Flossie Mann, of Elk Park, has also been a guest of Mrs. Butner for the past few weeks. Miss Ohle \ Receives Degree ' At the Brvn Mawr College Commencement today, A. B. de grees were awarueu by Presi dent Katherine E. Mcßride to 154 members of the senior class. Over 100 men and women re received higher degrees, includ ing 24 who were awarded the Ph. D., the largest number ever given in the Bdyan Mawr Grad uate School. Among those receiving the A. B. degree were Janet Ohde, dau ghter of Dr. and Mrs. Elpenor R Ohle, Route 5, Burnsville, in Biology. Pensacola Youth Group Elects Officers Reporter: Vicki Styles The Pensacola Methodist Youth Fellowship elected new officers on May 11, as follows: President, Weizie Harrison Met calf; Vice-Pres., Norma Jean Metcalf: Secretary, James Stu art Bagwell; Treas., Vicki Sty les; Boy Song Leader, Perry Wilson; G'rl song leader, Debby Autry; Reporter and Area Cha irman, Vicki Styles; Faith, Joy Robertson; Outreach, Janice Hensley; Witness, Margaret Hensley. Allss Wilson Awarded Prho Miss Frances Louise Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wilson, Micaville, N. C., was awarded the Second Prize in the Mabel M. Mills Bible Contest, at the Honors and Awards program Warren Wilson College, Swan nanoa, N. C. Miss Wilson is a graduate of East Yancey High School, class of 1965. Warren Wilson College is own ed and operated by the Board of National Missions, The United Presbyterian Church. U. S. A. Local Students Receive Degrees At A.S.T.C. Appalachian State Teachers College conferred degrees on 577 candidates in commencement exercises held Saturday morn ing, the 3rd. Receiving degrees from Yancey County were the follow’ng: Ted Lee Mathis (M. A.) of Burnsville; Brenda Louise Grindstaff (B. S.l, Green Moun tain; Judy Adale Thomas (B. S.(, Green Mountain. Burnsville Homemakers’ Club Meets At a meeting of the Burnsville Homemaker’s Club, held at the home of Mrs. C. O. Ellis Thurs day, May 25th, Mr. Paul Ost- Field Consultant for the American Cancer Society, N. C. Division, was the featured speaker. He asked the Club to sprnsor the organizat on of a Cancer Society in Yancey Coun ty, stating that this was one of only a few counties in Western N. C. without such a Society. The Pres dent, Mrs. Brooks Wil srn, asked Mrs. W. A. Y. Sar gent to look into the possibili ties of organizing a Cancer Society in the county. The Club held a lengthy dis cussion qjj the adoption of a specific project for the beautifi cation of the town of Burnsville. After a business meet ng, the hostesres, Mrs. C. O.
