Miss Ann Elizabeth Bailey,
Queen of Rhododendron
Miss Ann Elizabeth Baile' s
talent for "playing with fire”,
combined with her brunette
beauty, won her the title of 1967
Rhododendron Queen in the 2lst
annual 1 Rhododendron Festival
which took place atop Roan
Mountain on Saturday.
Miss Bailey is the daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Carl Bai
ley of Concord, and is a junior at
Queans College in Charlotte.
Her talent exhibitions was a
jazz dance with two fire batons,
and a fire hocp routine to the
overture frcm “West Side Story”.
Miss Brenda Heath of Fay
etteville was named as first run
ner up. Second runner-up was
Miss Rebecca Reid Wilkerson
of Reidsviilo. Third runner-up
was Miss Carolyn Huggins of
Gastonia. The fourth runner-up
was Miss Sandra Shoemak
er, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.
V. Shoemaker of Asheville. San
dra Jean was first runner-up in
the recent Miss North Carolina
contest, and is the reigning Miss
Asheville. She was also chosen
“Miss Congeniality” in votes
east by the 23 contestants at the
Festival
The five finalists were chosen
after intensive judging. One of
the judges, Col. Mercer Price of
Cone ml Beach, Fla., who has
judged mere than 200 beauty
contests, said that all the judg
es were in a quandry up until
the final judging and the new
Queen was announced. He said
that he felt any of the tep five
could have been named winner,
and that it was very difficult to
judge between Brenda Heath,
first runner up, and Miss Bailey.

White Oak Club
To Have Parade

The Community Club of White
Oak Creek Read is planning a
parade and picnic for the Fou
rth of July. The parade will
start from Lily Ballew’s store
at 10:00 a. m. The covered dish
picnic will bp held at noon near
the heme of Mary Jane Ballew.
The parade arrangements are
being made by the Boys and
Girls Club of the White Oak
Creek Community. A Royal Fam
ily of the Tomato Kingdom has
been elected. The King is Larry
Ballew. His Queen is Vicki
Gurley. The Prince is David
Carrcll and 1 the Princess is
Delhie Autrey. All are members
of the White Oak Boys and Girls
Club, whose project this summer
is growing tomatoes for the
market.
Arrangements for the picnic
are being made by Mary Jane
Ballew and Joyce Ballew.
All people living on or near
White Oak Creek are invited to
be on hand, and to bring their
friends.

held the first nice day following
the Fourth, but at 5:00 p. m. :
N.Y.C. Helps Fairchild Family Build Reservoir

On a recent visit to the Paul
Fairchild heme on White Oak
Creek, I found Mr. Fairchild
sick and in bed. However, he
was ab'e to give me some infor
mation on the work the N.Y.C.
Sanitation Crew had done at his
home. We talked for a while and
he went on to say how pleased
he was with the work. "They
built us an outside toilet and a
reservoir. This enabled me to
then put water in the kitchen.
If they hadn't done this work
for me I couldn’t have done
this.’’
Mrs. Fairchild said, “There
are seven living in our home and
it took one person busy nearly
all the time carrying water. It
sure is handy.”
In an article a few weeks ago,
Mr. Burris, W.A.M.Y. County
Coordinator, informed the peo
ple that there are too many jobs
for the work crew to get to all
at cnce. Mr. Fairchild confirm
ed this statement. “This job
Wc» started at my home last
July and it was only completed
during the nast few weeks. The
reason for this was because the
crew had to do work at several
schools in the county during the
time school was closed for the
summer. People should be pa
tient because sooner or later
they’ll get to their jobs. There
are too many jobs f°r the num
ber of boys who work.”
Mr. Fairchild went on to say,
“The intentions of the W.A.M.Y.
Program are good and the peo
ple should support it.”
