Miss Ann Elizabeth Bailey, Queen of Rhododendron Miss Ann Elizabeth Baile' s talent for "playing with fire”, combined with her brunette beauty, won her the title of 1967 Rhododendron Queen in the 2lst annual 1 Rhododendron Festival which took place atop Roan Mountain on Saturday. Miss Bailey is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Carl Bai ley of Concord, and is a junior at Queans College in Charlotte. Her talent exhibitions was a jazz dance with two fire batons, and a fire hocp routine to the overture frcm “West Side Story”. Miss Brenda Heath of Fay etteville was named as first run ner up. Second runner-up was Miss Rebecca Reid Wilkerson of Reidsviilo. Third runner-up was Miss Carolyn Huggins of Gastonia. The fourth runner-up was Miss Sandra Shoemak er, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Shoemaker of Asheville. San dra Jean was first runner-up in the recent Miss North Carolina contest, and is the reigning Miss Asheville. She was also chosen “Miss Congeniality” in votes east by the 23 contestants at the Festival The five finalists were chosen after intensive judging. One of the judges, Col. Mercer Price of Cone ml Beach, Fla., who has judged mere than 200 beauty contests, said that all the judg es were in a quandry up until the final judging and the new Queen was announced. He said that he felt any of the tep five could have been named winner, and that it was very difficult to judge between Brenda Heath, first runner up, and Miss Bailey.
