Craftsmen Return From Festival la Washington Nine local craftsmen will re* turn to Boone late Wednesday after representing North Caro lina at the First Festival of Am erican Folklore in Washington, D. C., during the July Fourth weekend. The craftsmen left for the na tion's capital on Friday, and spent the weekend demonstra ting their skills for thousands of July 4 tourists at the open-air Folklore Festival directed by the Smithsonian Museum. The Festival was held on the mall between the Washington Monument and the Capitol build ing. About 50 craftsmen from across the country worked in tents on the mall, explaining their crafts and selling their products. The trip of the local craftsmen was sponsored by the North Carolina Travel Council, accord ing to Mrs. Doris Potter of Nor th Wilkesboro, president of the Council. The Council helps sup port North Carolinians who re present the state at official ev ents across the country. Taking part in the trip were: Mrs. El sie Trivette of Beech Mountain, who demonstrated spinning, car ding and rug hooking; Dewey Harmon of Beech Creek, who makes wood carvings and whim meydiddles; Willard and Ora Watson of Deep Gap, who de monstrated wood carvings and quilting; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pres nell and their son Baxter of Rominger, who make and banjos and dulcimers; ’ftn sley of Spruce Pj* musical j and Taft » THE YANCEY RECORD r does hand weaving by some of the oldest methods found in the United States. Most of the craftsmen are al so part of the W.A.M.Y. Crafts program, which made arrange ments for the tiip. The program includes about 300 craftsmen in Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties. Products of these craftsmen are now sold across the United States. Some items are now on permanent display in the Smith sonian Museum in Washington, D. C., and a number of other craftsmen will also participate in the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. la!»r in July. W.N.C Baptist Coal.
