With the help of 15 volunteers and the extreme generosity of Mr. and Mrs. James Bingham, it is now possible for girls and boys from low-income families to attend Summer Day Camp at Camp Mt. Mitcheli. The camp is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00-12:00 noon. There are approximately 40-50 boys and girls attending. If there are other parents who feel this would be beneficial for tfceir children, contact Wanda Edwards, VISTA, or call 682- 2610 and, if transportation is needed, perhaps some means can be worked out. Many activities are being car ried out at camp. The boys and girls are acquiring new experi ences and learning through edu cational trips to the Library, town square and other places in town. They are learning about Yancey County as well as what is happening throughout the country past and present. Other activities are: crafts, na ture, reading and recreation. Summer Day Camp is operat ed by high school and college volunteers and other interested community persons and under the direction of Wanda Edw- THE YANCEY RECORD ards, VISTA, and Mrs. Eugene Burris. Without the help and interest of volunteers such as these, Day Camp would not be in operation. There’s much that can be done if people will only take the time and interest. Only by helping the young when they are young will we have better citizens and leaders in tomorrow’s world.
