Wilson of Rt. 2, Burnsville, N. C., has been named Out standing Noncommissioned Of ficer in his unit at Tan Son Nhut AFB, Vietnam. ’ Sergeant Banks, an adminis trative specialist, was selected for his leadership, exemplary conduct and duty performance. He supports the Pacific Air Forces which provides air pow er to maintain the U. S. defense pasture in the Pacific and con ducts air operations in South east Asia. The sergeant is a graduate of Bald Creek High School. His brother, Vernon C. Banks, resides on Rt. 3, Burnsville. FT ORD, CALIF. (AHTNC)— Army Private Dennis F. Riddle, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank J Riddle, and wife, Jear leen, live on Route 5, Burnsville, N C., completed eight weeks of advanced infantry training July 11 at Ft. Ord. Calif. TUY HOA, VIETNAM (AHT NC) First Sergeant Owen Robinson, son of Mrs. Minnie Robinson, Rt. 3, Burnsville, N. C., received the Army Commen dation Medal while serving with the 577th Engineer Battalion near Tuy Hoa, Vietnam, June 24. Sgt. Robinson earned the award for meritorious service during his last assignment at Ft. Bel voir, Va. The sergeant entered the Ar my in April 1948 and is now serving with the 577th Engineer Battalion’s Company A. He is a 1947 graduate of Bald Creek (N. C.) High School. His wife, Sue, lives at 2810 Cheery Blossom St., National City, Calif. (K 0849) MEMPHIS, TENN., (FHTNC) July 5 Marine Lan ce corporal Gary L. Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Rob inson of Micaville, N. C., was graduated from the Aviation Machinist Mate Jet Engine School at the Naval Air Techni cal Training Center in Memphis, Tenn. During the two-month course, he learned jet fundamentals, jet power plants operation and re placement, jet aircraft line op erations, assembly and disas sembly of jet power plants and power plant removal procedures. Before attending this school, he completed the two-week Av iation Familiarization and four week Mechanical Fundamentals courses. (PK0603) GREAT LAKES. ILL. (FHTNC) June 29 - Sea man Recruit Ben L. Silvers, USN, 18, son of Mrs. Linda H. Silvers of Route 4 Burnsville, N. C., has been graduated from nine weeks of Navy basic train ing at the Naval Training Cen ter here. In the first weeks of his naval service he studied military sub jects and lived and worker un der conditions similar to those he will encounter on his first ship or at his first shore station. In making the transition from civilian lide to Naval service, he received instruction under vet eran Navy petty officers. He ..jdied seamanship, as well as r iryival techniques, military —-ill and other subjects. SANDLEY POINT, PHILLIPPINES (FHTNC) July 13 Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Jerry B. Miller, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ear nest E. Miller of Route 4, Bur nsville, N. C.; is at the Sanglty Point Naval Station in the Re public of the Phillippines serving as a member of Patrol Squad ron One (VF-1). The squadron’s mission is an ti-submarine warfare, as well as ocean and coastal surveillance. Utilizing the SP-2H “Nep tune" aircraft, VP-1 flies miss ions supporting "Market Time" operations off the coast of Bouth Vietnam, and ocean surveillance patrols over the South China Sea. "Market Time" is the opera tion used to prevent the infil tration, by sea, of men, supplies and ammunition to enemy for ces operating in South Vietnam.
