The legislature authorized an increase in Patrol strength of 125 men over the biennium 1967-69. Major Jones noted there is a Patrol School underway now at the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill in which 34 men are enrolled. This school will be concluded on December 15. •‘Currently,*' Major Jones said, “There are 49 vacancies in the enforcement division, and we are not scheduled to begin another school in Chapel Hill un til January 8, 1968.” The patrol officers sakl, “ac cording to tentative plans, the school will begin November 19, at the State Fairgrounds Youth - Center in Raleigh. Veterans Obtain VA Home Loans More than 140,000 veterans, alines 5000 of them in North Carolina, who have served since the Korean C-nfiict have ob tained V A-guaranteed home leans totalling aimost $2.3 bill ion under the GI Bill which be came effective in March last year, W. R. Phillips, Manager of Ihe Winston Salem Veterans Ad ministration Regional Office, said today. An additional 7,685 have ob tained direct loans from Hie Veterans Administration amount ing to $92,488,000. All figures are through July 1967, Phillips said. Veterans eligible for this pro gram include those who served at least 181 continuous days in the Armed Forces, with some since February 1, 1955. Also eligible are persons still in the Armed Forces, provided they had at least two years in active duty status. The 1966 law, PL 89-358, per mits the Veterans Administra tion to guarantee up to $7,500, cr 50 per cent, of loans which eligible veterans may obtain fr.m private lenders. Hie guar antee in many cases makes K possible for veterans to obtain home loans with a low down payment or no down payment at all. VA also makes direct loans to veterans in certain isolated and rural areas where private lending facilities are not avail able. Under 1967 legislation, ef fective October 1, the limit was extended from $17,000 to $25,000. Phillips said veterans plann ing to buy a home may obtain additional information and cer tificates of eligibility from the Veterans Administration Region al Office, at 301 North Main Street, Winston-Salem, N.
