North Caro lina has been apportioned sll,- 435,201 for use in Ks sc’nol food serv.ce programs from the U. S. Depart men . Agriculture’s Consumer and Marketing Ser v.ce. This year’s apportionment is $986,883 more than last year, an increase of 9.44 per cent. These funds are to be used in prov ding help to North Carolina schools that operate lunch, m lk and breakfast programs. Al though USDA funds make an appreciable dent in the expense of school fund service programs, the children themselves pay for approximately 75 per cent of the cost with state, county and city governments pay ng about 5 per cent. North Carol ha, and all ether states, receive these USDA funds under two separate acts the National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act. The National School Lunch Act prov des funds for schools taking part in the national lunch program. A provision is also made under the act to give special ass stance to schools in low- ncome areas that are \ not financially able to offer stud ents the food service of the na tional school lunch program. TTie Child Nutrition Act mak es funds available to help scho ols provde all students with milk at a reduced price of free es cost; furnish a breakfast for those students who are espec ially needy or who have been bussed to school from a long distance; and buy equipment necessary for the operation of a food program. The newest of these programs is the breakfast program wh ch is still in a “plrt” stage. Last year, 207 schools in North Caro lina implemented a breakfast program.
