The first meeting of the Board of D rectors of the United Fund, and other interested persons, was held at the First Presbyter ian Church in Burnsville. Mr. E. L. Dillingham was elected President of the Organi zation, and Robert Rhinehart was elected Campaign Chairman. The new Board of Directors is made up of the following: Carroll Angel, Claude Veas, James Ray. Paul Wooten, Dr. Garland Wampler, Rev. Alvin Jones, Oscar Deyton, Ed Hun- Former Yancey Resident Found Dead In Fla. A former resident of Yancey County, N. C„ was found dead Monday in a parked car on Interstate 4 near Longwood, Fla. The Florida State Patrol said Bobby Joe Ray, 30, of Sanford, had been shot in the chest. His wallet was missing. An investi gation ia continuing. feay had been work'ng for about a month in Florida, where he lived with a sister. He was a son of Mrs: Ozain Ray of Burns ville, N. C. Rt. 5. Surviving in addition to the mother are two sisters, Mrs. CJ nu Autrey of Burnsville Jit S and Mrs. Opal Woody of San ford; five brothers, Frank of Erwin, Tenn., James of Marion, N. C., Clarence of Fullerton, Calif., and Kenneth and Billy Ray, both of Burnsville, Rt. 3. Services will be he.d at 2:33 p. m. Thursday in Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Burns ville. The Rev. Ralph Mumpower wll officiate. Burial will be in Ray Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Benny and Morris Huskins, Lndy and D. W. Styles and Floyd and Char lie McMahan. At the conclusion of the pro gram, plaques were presented to Mr. Roy Ray, 1967 President, and to Mr. Paul Wooten, 1967 Campaign Charman, in recog nition of their outstanding ser vices during 1967. The next meet : ng of the Board of D rectors will be held on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:36 p. m., at the Yancey County Court House. Yates Bailey of Bald Creek made the announcement this weds of h's intention of becom ing a candidate for the State House of Representatives from this district. Baley, a former teacher, ser ved a term in the State Senate when Ylancey was in a district with Mitchell and Avery Coun ties. Tb s Senator'al District is now made up of Yancey, Madi son and Haywood counties. In making the announcement Bailey said he felt that Hay wood County wth its popula tion would have a Representa tive from that county each ses sion of the Assembly and that Madison and Yancey counties should rotate each session. In the last election, L'ston B. Ramsey was elected from Madi son County as one Representa tive from the district. Bailey also pointed out that Yancey County Democrats pass ed a resolution to place the county back on the pr'mary election system for the selection of candidates for the general election and that this change was not made during the last leg's lative session. Bailey said he is in favor of the pr'mary system. A school teacher for many years in this and other coun ties, Bailey has always been active in church and civic affairs In his community and in the county. He is pres’dent of Bur nsville Lions Club and has been renominated to serve as the club’s president for another yew. E.Y. FHA Chapter Wins First Mace The East Yancey Chapter of Future Farmers of America finished f ret among 10 entree to win the annual Blue Ridge Federation Land Judging Con test, held at Mare Hll on Thurs day, March 14th. The North Buncombe FFA f nished hid, Marshall FFA was 3rd, A. C. Reynolds was 4th, and Charles D. Owen was sth. The winning team consisting of Jack Hensley. He began h's career as in tfaller repairman in 1927 wth the Burnsville Telephone Com pany. Wid can remember when the company operated with about a dozen telephones in Bakersville and 50 in Burnsville. He watched the number grow to 1039 in Bak ersville and 1583 in Burnsville by the end .of 1967. Purpose of the scholarship is to encourage a boy or g rl from the area to enter the professional field cf horticulture and to pro vide financial assistance to them in attend ng college.
