HARGROVE SPIAKS TO MNTAI HEALTH GROUP AT AKA MUTING Approximately 100 pecple gathered at the Community Build ng in Burnsville on Wed nesday to hear an address by Dr. Eugene Hargrove. SVate Mental Health Comissioner. The group was made up of interested ctzens from the counties of Bunccmbe. Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey, and comprised re presentatives of Welfare agen c es, hosp tals, mental health clinics, dcctcrs, ministers and just pJa n people. The welcome was g'ven Jjy Mr. Q. W. Deyton, Chmn. County ißcard of Commissioners. Mrs. Louella Honeycutt, Chmn. cf the Yancey County Mental Health Ass*n. introduced Dr. W. M. Fulkes, Jr., Deputy Ccmmis s cner for the Wester n Reg on cf the State Dept, of Mental Health. Dr. Folkes stated that the rea son fer the meeting was to find ways and means by which a community may cooperate in the establ shment of a mental health program, and the estab lishment of a comprehensive community mental health cen ter. He stated that very often tpen gong into a community the first question o asked was “What are you going to do about th's", which quest on he immed THE YANCEY RECORD iately put back in the lap of the asker; that communit es should first ask themselves what they can do about the problem, make a survey of the resources in the community that people gener ally were not aware of the as sets in ther own community or town. Dr. Folkes then introduced Dr. Hargrove, who pointed out the great changes that have taken place in the last fifty years, and espec aHy in the last ten or IS years in the treatment of re tardation and mental illness. He said that SO years ago mental illness was thought of as a very dreadful k'nd of sickness, the only treatment being to put the person away in an isolated state hoq>ita!; that these in st tutions were most often plac ed out in the country away from communty contact so far away that the patient had few vsits from family or friends; that such institutions .were called “Insane Asylums”, which car red a very ugly connotation, and became associated with isola tion and. segreg'it on.
