Upward Bound Program

federal grant of $66,609 wth
which to establish and operate
an Upward Bound program It
approximately 50 eccnor'iciilly
and culturally disadvantaged
high school students m Madison
and Buncombe counties has been
ann< unced by Mars Hill College.
The money, appropriated thro
ugh the Office of Economic Op
pcrtun ty, will finance a 13-
month prngmm which officially
begins May 15.
Dr. John M. Hough, Jr., head
cf the college’s Department Os
Education, has been named pro
ject director. He sad he will
seek re-newal of the project and
additional funding for 196970.
If he is successful, the students
in ‘ ally chosen to participate in
the program may continue in it
a second year.
Heavily concentrated in the
summer but cont nuing through
the normal school year, the pro
gram will enroll 25 rising sopho
n < res and 25 rising juniors.

Objective of the Uwpard Bound
progium is to take the students
where they are academically,
culturally and physically and
guide them and encourage them
in their progress in each area
as much as possible.
“Another significant goal,” Dr.
Hough explained, “will be to de
velop a pos tive attitude in
these students toward all as
pects of life, particularly toward
education.”
Mrs. Marietta Suhart, deputy
director of the Opportunity Cor
poraton of Madison and Bun
combe counties, assisted Dr.
Hough and other members of the
college faculty in drawing up
the proposal which was submit
ted n seeking funds for the pro
jell. The Asheville-based corpor
ation will continue to assist the
college in the operat on of the
program.
An eight-week summer pro
gram involving the Upward
Bcund youths both boys and
girls will beg n on campus
here June 17. It will include in
div dualized instruction in lang
uage arts reading, writing,
listening and speak ng and in
mathematics arithmetic, al
gebra and geometry. Physical
cducat on and drama also will
be included. «
Supplementary activities will
include attendance at plays u
Asheville, Burnsville and Flat
Rock: attendance at musical
programs on campus here, at
Brevard and other places; parti
cipat cn in the Mars Hill College
Summer Theater Workshop; and
field trips to the state capital
and to other scenic and historic
points throughout the state.
Students will be selected for
the program by Dr. Hough, using
080 critera. He will accept re
commendations from school gui
dance directors, principals and
teachers ar.d from persons affi
liated with various community
action organizat ons.
The teaching staff for the pro
gram will consist of seven per
sons; a high school read ng
specialist, two English teachers,
two mathematics teachers, a
physical educat on instructor
and a drama teacher. Part of
these will come from the college
faculty and part from the facul
ties of the high schools whose
students will be part cipating in
the program.
In addition to the teaching
staff, seven Mars Hill College
students wli be employed as
tutors and dormitory counselors.
They will live in the dorms with
the Upward Bound students and
wll work closely with them in

Follow-through on the pro
gram will keep students, teach
ers and the tutor-counselors in
touch throughout the 1968-69
school year. On six Saturdays
during the year the entire
group wll return to the campus
here fer special sessions.
In addition to paying the
teachers, administrative person
nel and tutor-counselors, the
federal grant will provide room
and board for the Upward Bound
students and give each a small
weekly allowance for personal
needs. It also will cover medi
cal and dental exam nations for
the students and some types of
corrective treatment.
The students will receive free
admission to all cultural, recrea
t orial and athletic activities
sponsored by the college both
during the summer tand during
the 1968-69 school year.

cessary to the bookmobiles op
erated in the three counties by
the Aveiy-Mitchell-Yancey Re
g'onal Library, bookmobile ser
vice has unavoidably been in
terrupted.
Jason B. Deyton, chairman of
the Regional Library's board of
trustees, has announced that the
bnokmobles will resume their
trips just as soon as repairs are
completed and new schedules
can be worked out.
