“Men often dream dreams of
what could be. They recognize
in their surroundings the in
gredients for something better,
| for making things easier and
"more pleasant for themselves,
for providing more meaningful
and more beneficial life for ,
their children. Too often those
dreams are not fulfilled. For
lack of resources, the potential
is not realized. For lack of cour
age, the challenge is not con
fronted. For lack of initiative,
the task is not begun. There are
many who dream of better
things and who do nothing to
change reality.”
These were the opening words
of Gov. Dan Moore Tuesday as
he addressed the Appalachian
Development Conference a t
Ashevillle-Biltmore College*
The two-day Governor’s Con
ference on Appalachian Devel
opment was called by Gov.
Moore because, the Governor
Bai j>. JMMfe KIUMW
responsible for the recent sur
ge of progress. ... It is the
people of Western North Caro
lina who must see that the im
petus for improvement is not
lost, that the progress which
benefits all people continues
and accelerates in the months
and years ahead.”
In words to impress the need
of expanded private enterprise
upon- the men and women invit
ed to attend the conference,
Gov. Moore said that extended
school facilities are worth little
unless good jobs are available
for those who take advantage
of the educational opportunities,
and that access roads are im
portant to . more people when
they lead to better jobs.
In ending his address, the
Governor said that “Western
North Carolina will became in
the futur-j what you would have
it become.”
Dan E. Stewart, Director N.
C. Department of Conservation
and Development, praised the
high type of labor found in this
part of the state. He also point
ed out that within the past
ten years in this region of Nor
th Carolina 902 new industries
have been established, 819 have
expanded, with an investment
of more than SBOO million. These
industries, Stewart said, have
created new annual payrolls of
$245 million.
Mr. Stewart stressed the
point of the need for local gov
ernments and investors to de
velops water and sewer facili
ties, which are requirements
for development and grow h of
an area. He said that “the po
tential growth pattern is being
raded by State and Federal
hinds”. Beyond this point, how
ever, local governments and
private investors must take
over.
Persons attending the Gover
nor’s Conference from this
Nunbur Forty Tbruu
county included Supt. of Schools
H. D. JusHce, Attorney Phillip
Thomas and Amey Fox.
