Mclntosh, Jr. The week of August S through 9 offered many opportunities for fun and learning to the Girt (Scouts from all troops in Yan cey County who attended Briar Bottom Day Camp. Approximat ely 70 girls were registered and there was very good attendance throughout. The girls did a fine job of put ting up and taking down their camp, with equipment provided by the Pisgah Girl Scout Coun cil. During the week a program of crafts, hiking, outdoor cook ery, overnight camping, etc., was provided, with the girls not only learning many outdoor skills, but, very importanttly, learning how to work together with each individual doing her part. It was a real opportunity for girls from different areas of the county to come to know and respect each other. Brownies are 7 and 8 year old Girl Scouts who do not sjx'J the night at camp. For them one of the highlights of camp was learning to build a fire and cook an outdoor meal. For Junior Girl Scouts, who are 9, 19, and 11 yfrars old, the camp offered an overnight on \ Spaghetti and M*at Balls I I IURNSVIUE °| Donald Duck . j a. These girls did a fine job of setting up camp while there. This was an unforgettable experience for them, and they may be justly proud of their competence. A great many people are to be thanked for making this Day Camp possible. Our camp was held on forestry land, and the men of the Forest Service here were untiring in their ef forts to make every facility available. Mrs. Helton Carmichael was director of the camp, assisted by Mrs. George Hicks and Mrs. Nell Hoover. Mrs. Edgar Hen sley was Business Manager, and Mrs. Eileen Biggerstaff was Registrar. Mrs. Garland Wamp ler was camp nurse, and Dr. E. R. Ohle was the doctor on call. Mrs. Mary Hess was in charge of crafts, and Mrs. Edgar Hun ter. Jr. was song leader. Rev. Alvin Jones did a great service for the Girl Scouts by providing bus transportation and serving as driver. Mr. and Mrs. Helton Carmi chael, Mr. and Mrs. James Cov ington, and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Mclntosh, Jr., accompanied the Cadettes into Lost Cove. Mr. Blaine* Ray served as guide for hikes on forestry land. To all these people go many, many thanks for all the wwrk, time, and the contributions which they made toward making Briar Bottom Day Camp such a good experience for the Girl Scouts of Yancey neighbprhood.
