Chairman Os Founders & Builders Program Named Rev. Ben Lee Ray, pastor Garssy C"eek Baptist Church, Spruce Pine and Charles Grind staff, Webb Fune al Home, Spruce Pine, have been named Chairman for Mitchell, Avery and Yancey Count'es for the Founders and Bidders Program of the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina. As County Chairmen, Rev. Ray and Mr. Grindstaff will provide leadership and guidance for the numerous volunteers in these coun'ies as they all seek to raise the necessary monies for the establishment of a Children’s Home for Western North Carolina. The home, to be located on a 96 acre tract between Waynes ville and Clyde, will p~ovide group living care for about 50 beys and girls. It will also serve as a hub from which will radia te the numerous child care ser vices of the Baptist Children’s Homes. The campus will be built surrounding a six acre lake with four family style cottages for six boys and six girls with housepairents quavers, separat ing the children’s wings. Each cottage will have a cen trally located dining area with living and play rooms provided to help the chiildren develop in more normal home-like atmos phere. Also on the campus will be a Campus Center housing the ad ministrative, educational and recreational facilities and a superintendent’s home Target date for the admission of the first child is September. 1969 THE YANCEY RECORD A group of 36 livestock pro ducers and agricultural leaders of the area made a th-ee-day tour of outstanding cattle op erations in South Carolina, Geor gia and riwiuS. The meeting Monday was at tended by Dr. William Fowlkes of Raleigh, depu'y director of the North Carolina Department of Mental Health, and Dr. Olin Freeman, of the staff of Brough ton Hospital, was a guest. Dr. Fowlkes led in a discus sion on personnel requirements for the preposed fcur-county Mental Health Center staff, which will include psychologists and psychiaric serial wo kers as well as office and administrative personnel. Mrs. Louella Honeycutt of Burnsville, head of the mental health association for Yancey County, and a member of the local Center board, discussed the work of her g“oup. She said that home demonstration club members had participa’ed in raising funds, that a Day Ca-e Canter for children is presently operating, that it has been s’affed by volunteers and work has been done by VISTA and WAMY workers, (WAMY is an o-ganiza ion through the Office of Economic Opportunity embracing Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties. She pointed out that the county has some 40 childrene dig|»l for day care in the center and who would benefit from the Center’s facilities and program. Mrs. Honeycu t also said that the Yancey County mental health association will be host for an ou'ing on Oct. 9 for some 40 patients from Unit A of Broughton Hospital, and that a program is being planned with the cooperation of forestry per sonnel.
