YftE YANCEY RECORD OBITUARIES Byrd ZEKE BYRD Service* for Zeke B. Byrd, 72, who died Friday, were held at S p. m. Sunday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home, Asheville. The Rev. D. M. G. Warner of ficiated Burial was in Brown Cemetery, Cullowhee. Pallbearers were Vcraie Wil son, Hubert Cooper, James Rhash, Robert Hughes, Barry and Robert Peek, Edward Gra ham and Roy Ray. Mr. Byrd served for many years as district ranger in a number of U. S. National For ests, including Nantahala and IPlsgah national forests and the Arkansas National Forest. He later was connected with the TVA land acquisition office, with headquarters in Bryson City. He returned to Burnsville in 1945, where he taught biology in East Yancey High School un til his retirement in 1961. Mr. Byrd, a Yancey County native, graduated from the Uni versity of Georgia School of Forestry in 1925. He was a former district pre sident of the N. C. Education Association and was a member of Higgins Memorial United Methodist' Church. He wa s a World War I veteran, serving with the 119th Infantry, and was a member of the American Legion here. Surviving a r « his wife, Mrs. Lois Wike Byrd; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Dendy of Young Harris, Ga.; two sons, Charles E. of Marietta, Ga., and Richard E. Byrd of Atlanta; seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Miller W. BURGIN MILLER ‘•V Burgin Miller, 94, died un xpeetedly Monday afternoon i his home. He was a native of Mitchell County and a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Hensley and Mrs. John Bennett, and a son, Bill Miller, all of Burnsville Rt. 6; tlree half-sisters, Mrs. E.bel Gilley and Mrs. Mae Autrey, both of Burnsville Rt. 2, and Mrs. Marjorie McCurry of Mar ion; two half-brothers, Clyde and Frank Miller, both of Sprue* Pine; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday in Bolens Creek Bap tist Church. The Rev. A. Z. Jamerson and the Rev. Richmond Barnett of ficial. Burial was in the fam ily cemetery. Sparks, to, who died Friday in Westminister, Md„ were held Tuesday at li a. m. in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Frank Parsons offi ciated. Burial was in the chur ch cemetery. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Maude Higgins of Westmin ister and Mrs. Mae Parker of Baltimore, Md.; a son, Oscar Sparks of Bellaire. Md.; and two sisters, Mrs. John C. Woody of Burnsville and Mrs. D. S. Johnson of Green Mountain Wilson THOMAS Y. WILSON Thomas Y. Wilson. 44, former ly of the Swiss section of Yaa cey County, died unexpectedly Sept. 24, in Ulyaaes. Pa. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack Russell of Swannanog nnd Mrs. Frank Bradley of As heville; two sons, Gary of Swan nanoa and Lee Wilson of De troit, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. Madge Bryson, Mrs. Creed Me- Intoeh and Mrs. Clyde Ollis, alf of Asheville; four brothers Paul of Flint, Mich., Arnold of Portsmouth, Va., Earl of Pana ma City, Fla., and Van Wilaoa ot Greenville, S. C. Service were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Swiss. The Rev. Jay Blankenship of ficiated. The club at this time adopted it’s by-laws md voted on offi cers who vre"! elected as fol lows: Chairman, Mrs Billy Wilson; Vice-Chairman, Mrs. Dean Chrisawn; Corresponding S6cr*> tary, Mrs. Steve Boone; Record ing Secretary, Mrs. Reba Woody; Treasurer, Mrs. Belle Griffith; Assistant Treasurer, Mrs. Bert S.amey. Also at this meeting commit tee Chairmen were appointed as follows: Membership Mrs. Earl Young Program, Mrs. W. P. Honeycutt; Finance, Mrs. Bert Stamey; and Public Relations, Mrs. Steve Boone and Mrs. Dean Chrisawn. Mrs. Honeycutt, working with the American Red Cross brought Ditty Bags to the meeting. Twelve of the bags were distri buted to the members to be filled for servicemen in Viet nam for the Christmas Season. These were presented to Mrs. Harlon Holcombe on Tuesday, October 8, by Mrs. Peggy Wil son, Chairman. This endeavor has given members a great sense of accomplishment. AH people in the county, young and old, are invited ,to see Cider pressed on the spot and to sample old fashioned fresh cider. Come one, come all, it’s open house. There will be a meeting of Republican men and women on Thursday, October 10th at 8:00 at Republican Headquarters in Burnsville.
