HARKINS Appointment Os WNC Legislators To House And Senate Rules Committee House Speaker Earl Vaughn and Lt. Gov. Pat Taylor, Jr., at a joint news conference, an nounced the appointment of five Wes'era North Carolina legisla tor to the House and Senate Rules Committee for the 1969 General Assembly, which begins Jan. 15. They are Sen. R. T. <Ted) Dent of Asheville, a Re publican; Sen. Clyde M. Norton of Old Fort, a Democat; Rep. Herschel S. Harkins of Asheville, a Democrat; Rep. James E. Holhouser, Jr., of Boone, a Re publican; and Rep. Liston B. Ramsey of Marshall, a Demo crat. Ramsey and Holhouser were named as Viee-Chai-men of the House Committee. Hol houser is chmn. of the S‘ate Re publican party. Sen. Dent was named as one of the two chair men of the Sena’e Committee. Vaughn stated that he hoped work could befin immmediately. The book capacity of the en larged facility will be increased from 8000 to 30,000 volumes and will serve Mitchell, Avery and Yancey Counties. Construction work will cost a total of $161.- 070. A total 167,962 will be pro vided through the Library Ser vices and Construction Aet; $32,214 from local sources and the $60,894 from the Appalach ian Regional Committee. New Furnace Being Installed At Burnsville School A new furnace will be install ed m the Rock Building at Bur nsville Elementary School. The furnace, which was installed when the building was construc ted, started leaking water, and due to the condition and age of the furnace officials decided it would be wise to install a new furnace rather than trying to re pair the oM one. The students will hold cUtftti in the Agricultural Building and gymnasium the rest of the wmk. According to Mr. Justice, School Superintendent, they expect to ’ have the new furnace in work ing order by Mooday of next Thursday, Jaauary 9, 1969 LAUGHRUN AND HELM ELECTED DIRECTORS OF ASHEVILLE AGRICULTURAL DEV * COUNCIL Paul Laughrun, Dist. Super visor, Famers Home Adm., and Robert K. Helmle of Burns ville, have been elected Direc tors of the Asheville Agricultur al Development Council for 1969 representing Yancey coun’y. The election took place at the annual mee ing of the 18 county area development association this week. Purpose of the agricultural Development Council, which was formed 18 years ago, is to help develcpe opportunities for in creased income and to promote rural progress. A major activity is sponsoring the Western North Carolina Community Develop ment Program in cooperation with the agricul.ural agencies aid local sponsors in each county. Frank L. Yarbrough of Marion, manager of Duke Power Com pany was elected president of the organization, succeeding James F. Davis of Asheville. The Mayland Chapter was re cently formed through a con solidation of toe Red Cross Chapters of Mitchell, Avery and Yancey Counties.
