IHMI Volume 33 I From I i THE EDITOR’S DESK f Wc were honored to receive in the mail yesterday the foll owing letter from Milton Weiss, prominent Floridian and presi dent of Miami Beach Federal. We appreciate his interest and the efforts lie has already male to promote a countywidc clean up campaign. Every week the Yancey Re cord will print a picture of un sightly areas near us and will keep our rea leis informed about any progress being made. Dear Mr. Yuziuk, I am a five-year sometime summer resident of Bumsvil Id For the last couple of years I have been "bugging" the May or about enacting some ordi nances possibly tied-in with County and State law having to do with air, stream and land pollution, which I have seen on the increa&e in and around ' Burnsville since I first arrived there. I think some small pro - gross is being made, but not enough and not fast enough. If the people of Burnsville and the surrounding area could only know what has happened in otter once beautiful areas, they would has ten their efforts. I congratulate you for the picture and story on the front page of your Thursday, June 19 edition. I believe that one of the y most important things that can be done for Burnsville and all Accident Fatal To Yancey Man Woodrow Pierson, 57, died Monday afternoon in a local hos pital following an accident at his home here. Included in this should also be adequate zo ning laws. It is a disgrace to see aban doned cars all over the beauti ful landscape of Yancey County and, if you take notice of the streams, you will see that they are full of all kinds of trash and garbage. The last time I was in Burnsville, which was appro ximately six weeks ago, I saw black smoke coming out of the Yancey High School ( I wrote the Mayor about it). This area is on the verge of tremendous growth. Unfortuna tely, with growth comes destru ction. Let's not let it happ e n in Burnsville. Sincerely yours, Milton Weiss Top Gov Official To Seek Aid For Hwy Improvement By Robert Helmle A visit from John B. Waters, Jr., top Federal official of the Appalachian Regional Commi ssion, provided an exceptional opportunity last Monday for showing at first hand the need for improvement of Highway 19 and 19E. Waters, who was appointed three months ago by President Nixon to head the agency which is spending vast Federal Appro - priations on highway improve - mqnt in Appalachia, made a close examination of our wind - ing obsolete highway. Starting at Mars Hill, and continuing in Yancey, Mitchell and Avery counties, his party continued to the Tennessee line on 19E above Elk Park. All the North Carolina peo ple who participated in the in spection tour were much impres sed by Water's understanding of the need of our mountain area for better roads. Equally im pressive was this top Fed e r.a 1 official's down-to-earth frank ness about his problems in Wash Thursday, Jum 26, 1969 . * ~~ ' JIBBS mmmmi m 96 JMtJM h , w ’ ‘ft ,$• '^OfKKr9f^yM(SwL , f' Jnsjfl' »jc 1 f%{&, *^ ■ &£&?* ss* MfcLIM 'trf xs S 't > SBP Vnk KldPiS, aJfb ■' • - IKUi » Bt|. One member of the party, at ter talking to Waters at some length commented that it was quite unnecessary to 'sell' him on the need for the highway im provement. Waters, he said is able to state the case even be tter than the local people. Waters is a native of Sevier-- ville; so has grown up with close understanding of Appalachian problems. He stated that one of the big difficulties of his Fede - ral job, is getting across to Cai gress and the Washington bureau cracy a better understanding of these mountain area problems. He said that he was giving con sideration to holding Commissirn hearings down in this area, which would bring some of the Washin gton 'brass' down here where they could see at first hand, and be nefit from contacts with the lo cal citizens. Following Waters' tourof the three N.C, counties, he was met by representatives from Tenne ssee who are concerned about improving the termination of • Highway 19E in their state. A large banquet was given for the distinguished visitor at Milligan College, at which he spoke of the work of the Appalachian Co mmission, About twenty Yan cey County people attended this banquet, the guests of the Tenn essee people. This eventful visit of Waters was the result of a great promo tional effort put forth by the N. C.-Tenn. Highway and Tourism Development Association, which is an organization with numerous Yancey County members, devo ted specifically to promoting the improvement of U.S. 19 and 19E Bill Wilkins is the present North Carolina chairman of this organ ization, and Mrs. Ruth Johns o n die secretary. Also participating in the promotion and planning was the Mountain Scenic Development Commission, of which Yancey County is a member, . Yancey County people who Number Forty Two accompanied Waters on his tour were James Ray, Bill Banks Helmle and Grace Banks. As the procession of cars passed through each county, represen tatives of that county rode with Waters. The party stopped for light refreshments at the Nu- Wray Inn and were the guests of Irene Coletta and the Robbins Brothers for lunch at Hounds Ears. Wison m Head Schools Mr. Landrum Wilson, for mer superintendent of Andrews City Schools, has been appoin ted the new superintendent of Public Schools in Yancey Corn ty.
