The windy, rainy, cold weather may have dampened
the zest of some youthful Trick or Treaters on Hallo 'ween
night, but the gloom was an ideal cover for intrepid
Pranksters who decided that Captain Otway Burns should
have an adornment.
Crowning the noble captain, impaled on his cap, is
the age-old symbol of Hallo'ween: A Jack - O - Lantern
The pranksters' identity remains a mystery, but a
likely line-up of suspects can be found on page 14 of this
issue.

Heart Scan For Children

come to an end. The Pan -
ther's final record was 3 wins
and 7 losses. The boys who
played showed a great deal of
improvement over the season

Laymen volunteers will
use a machine called the
Phono Cardio Scan, which is
able to detect a murmur in a
person's heart within two aid
a half minutes. This causes
no pain, no medicine is in
volved, no needles, said Mrs.
Mary S. Wilson, area coordi
nator for the project.
A training program for
volunteers will begin in De
cember with the screening of
children at Deyton Elementa
ry School in Spruce Pine.

Economic Impact Os 6,000 Acre Resort
Will Be Felt Through Entire Region
An announcement was
made last Friday regarding ai

The Christmas season is al
most here again. We should
mail our packages and Christmas
greetings in time for them to
reach their destination byChrist
mas Day. In order to do this
the following time table shouU
be used:
Mail to Armed Forces Over
seas - APO & FPO:
1- mail should be in
the mail by November 8, 1969.
2- SAM Mail should be mail
ed by November 22, 1969.
3- PAL Mail should be mailed
by November 29, 1969.
4- Air Mail should be mailed
by December 13, 1969.
Be sure to include the APO
or FPO number in the mailing
address.
Domestic packages and greet
ing cards should be mailed by
December 15. All packages ei
ther domestic or foreign should
have inside the package a list
of the contents and the address
of the mailer and the addressee
so that the package can be de
livered even if the wrapper is
detached.
Patrons on rural routes who
mail cards and letters during De
cember must affix the post age
stamps. The rural carries are
not required to perform this ser
vice during the month of Decern

saw their first snowfall of the
winter season on Monday af
ternoon. Snow flurries con
tinued at intervals through -
out the night and the early
morning hours.

program will be prepared this
winter to complement the
spectacular mountain golf
course which opened last sum
mer and the partially com
pleted Wolf Laurel Ski Village.
Plans now are for the ski
facility to be opened in the
winter of 1970. There will
be three ski slopes inclu d e d
in the complex and two 18-

Highway 19
Heads List
The improvement of US 19
from Burnsville west to Cane
River has been recommended
as a top priority highway con
struction project by Novile C.
Hawkins, area Highway Com
missioner from Mars Hill.
Hawkins said this week he
had called for action on the
project which was suspended
when the Highway Comir.is -
sion was unable to sell the
last S6O million of its S3OO
million bond issue became of
interest rates.
The two-mile stretch of
road is expect ed to cost
$1,200,000. Right of way
acquisition, which was sus -
pended when the bonds were
frozen, can be resumed as
soon as the Commission ap
proves the project.

million dollar resort, C. P.
Edwards m, was lauded for
the business vision and darirg
he exhibited in this project.
Edwards began developing the
6,000 acre area several years
ago and will now take a seat
on the board of directors of
the new company which is to
rake over the expansion and
; complet ion of the resort. The
company which now holds tic
majority interest of the Bald
! Mountain Development Corp.
and Wolf Laurel faoperties ,
Inc. is named Dynamic Sys
tems, Inc. and is a subsidiary
of a public company called
60 Minutes System Inc.
This resort and those at
Seven Devils and BeechNbun
tain will make this area the
ski center of the south said

The results of Tuesday's
election on the Option l<fc
Sales Tax surprised a great
many people. An unoffi c ial
tally of ballots showed the tax
issue, which would have sup
plied the Yancey school sys
tem with badly needed funds,
was defeated by only 9 votes.
