"Operation Santa Claus"is the annual effort of the North Carolina Mental Health Asso - Briggs And McGuire Join Staff The Yancey Record staff is happy to have two new ad ditions to our work force, Miss Patsy Briggs and Mr. Jerry Mc- Guire. Miss Briggs, who is our Office Manager, has been with us for several weeks now and was pinch-hitting for a time selling advertisement. She is 18 years old, a 1969 gradu ate of Cane River HigiSchool, and lives with her parents in the Cane River Community. In her job she handles the sub scription and news departments. She also adds considerable Patsy Briffs ciation to make sure that every one of the several thousand pa tients in North Carolina mental institutions will have some ap propriate gifts this Christmas. Last year, "Operation Santa Claus" produced some 45,000 gifts to bring Christmas Cheer to North Carolina's mental pa tients. North Carolina Mental Health Association leaders are shooting for as many or more gifts this year. Each local Mental Health charm and sparkle to an other wise dreary man's enterprise. Mr. Jerry McGuire, our Advertising Manager, was ed ucated in Avery CountySchxk and attended Palmer College in Augusta, Georgia. He formerly worked as sales ma nager for Krispy Kreme Ebus>- nuts Company in Augusta, Ga. Jerry is 27 years old, married to the former Marilyn Over street of Davisboro, Ga., and is die father of two boys,Clint age 3 and Stephen age 1. He presently resides on Main St. below the town square. » Jtk wLf MH Jmi IcMn Thursday, November 13,1969 Furnace Blast Causes Sudden Fire- Total Destruction Os Trailer Home A fire destroyed the trail er home of Mr. and Mrs. W ade Gurley at 8:30 a. m. on No vember 10th. According to Mrs. Doris Gurley, she was sitting on a couch in the living area with her children close by when the furnace door blew open and flames started shooting out. She hurried her four Association across the state is directing the project in its own area. Residents of those areas are urged to participate in the various gift-collection pro - grams set by the local Asso - ciation. Residents of areas where there is no local MentalKballh Association are urged to set up their own gift-collection pro grams through church groups, schools, or civic organizations. The gifts may be delivered either to the nearest Mental Heal th Association or Clinic, or to the Director of Volunteer Services at the Regional State Hospital or Center for the Re tarded. December 14th is the deadline for gifts to be deli - vered to the proper places so that gifts can be selected for the individual patient. Gifts should be new and unwrapped, but wrapping paper should be included with your gifts. Children's toys for any age are needed, such as balls, dolls, educational toys, re cords, games and sturdy cars and trucks. Individual gifts could be shirts, sweaters, belts, hand kerchiefs, purses, lipstdckand shaving products, etc. 'Larger gifts for the wards in general could be washers and dryers (needed by Brough ton sewing machines, hair dryers, pianos, popcorn poppers or recreation equip - ment such as fishing supplies. There are 15,000 pa tients and students in the stale hospitals and centers for the retarded in North Carolina. Mary Selene Duncan Rhododendron Queen Will Ride In Parade Miss Mary Selene Duncan, from Laurel Hill, North Caro lina will appear in the 1969 Christmas Parade sponsored by the Yancey County Jaycees. Miss Duncan was crowned Miss 1970 Rhododendron Queen this past summer atop the world's largest natural rhodo - dendron gardens on Roan Main Number Sixfy -One old, escaped any injury as did her girls. The Gurley's lost all of their belongings which were in the trailer, and the trail - er itself was a total loss. Presently, the family is staying with Mr. Gurley's fa ther, Mr. Paul Gurley, in his home at Route sinCelo.
